It does use 3 colors at one time for some of the designs. It is worked in one piece from top down. The weight is perfect for those cool mornings or evenings. Arrows (Piler) Poncho by Ann Iverson
What is Being Made
The Arrows (Piler) Poncho is a top-down knitted poncho featuring decorative arrow motifs across the body. Named after the large arrows that embellish the design, with "Piler" referencing the Norwegian word for arrows, this poncho serves as a versatile layering piece perfect for cool mornings and evenings. The design is worked in one piece from the neck down, making it an efficient and enjoyable knitting project. The poncho is available in three finished sizes with neck circumferences of 26, 28, or 29 inches and lower edge circumferences of 50 inches, offering options for different body types and desired fit.
Techniques Used
This poncho employs top-down construction, a popular method in modern knitting that allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and easily adjust the finished length. The piece is worked in the round using circular needles, which creates seamless fabric and maintains consistent tension throughout. Colorwork is a primary technique featured in this design, with the arrow pattern created through the strategic use of multiple yarn colors worked into the knit fabric. This method of combining colors within a single row or round adds visual interest and creates the distinctive arrow design that defines the poncho.
Stitches Used
The Arrows (Piler) Poncho incorporates ribbing at the neck opening, which provides elasticity and helps the poncho sit securely around the shoulders. The main body is worked in single color and colorwork pattern, with the gauge specified at 21 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in both single color sections and colorwork sections. This consistent gauge across different stitch patterns ensures that the color transitions remain even and the overall proportions of the poncho remain accurate.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Arrows (Piler) Poncho is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn that provides excellent drape and is suitable for layering pieces. The pattern calls for four yarn colors: Rhys in green as the main color (MC), requiring 460 yards for the smallest size up to 531 yards for the largest size; Saffron in rust as contrast color 1 (CC1), requiring 85 to 95 yards; Cardinal in red as contrast color 2 (CC2), requiring 63 to 70 yards; and Blue Button Jar in turquoise as contrast color 3 (CC3), requiring 28 to 32 yards. The pattern specifies US size 4 circular needles in 24-inch length for the neck ribbing and US size 5 circular needles in both 24-inch and 32-inch lengths for the main body, allowing knitters to switch needle sizes as the circumference increases. A tapestry needle is also required for weaving in yarn ends and finishing.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Arrows (Piler) Poncho is suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of top-down construction, circular needle work, and colorwork techniques requires familiarity with these methods, though the straightforward shaping and well-structured pattern make it accessible to those ready to advance beyond beginner projects. The colorwork element adds complexity but is manageable for intermediate-level knitters seeking to develop or refine their skills in working with multiple colors.
