What is Being Made

The Aril Necklace is a knitted jewelry piece designed by Kourtney Robinson and presented by Dollybird Workshop. The necklace takes its name from the aril—the proper term for the edible, densely packed, gem-like seeds found within a pomegranate. This pattern creates a simple yet spectacular necklace by combining knitting techniques with beadwork to achieve a jewel-like appearance reminiscent of pomegranate seeds.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs linen stitch as its primary construction technique. Linen stitch is a classic knitting method that creates a dense, textured fabric with a distinctive woven appearance. The pattern integrates bead insertion throughout the knitted structure, using a 0.6mm crochet hook to thread beads onto the working yarn. This combination of linen stitch and strategic bead placement produces the necklace's spectacular, gem-studded aesthetic.

The pattern provides multiple yarn and bead options to suit different color preferences:

• Green & Brown Version: Cephalopod Yarns "Nautilace" (60% silk, 40% baby camel down; 365m/400yd per 56g/2oz skein) in color Green Cobra Guppy (C04), requiring 30m/33yd; paired with Miyuki 6/0 Seed Beads in color 6-9458-TB (approximately 400 beads from 2–20g tubes)
• Red Version: Handspun Laceweight yarn (50% silk, 50% merino) requiring 30m/33yd; paired with Miyuki 6/0 Seed Beads in color 6-304 (approximately 400 beads from 2–20g tubes)
• Green & Silver Version: Vineyard Silk "Classic" (100% silk; 27m/30yd per skein) in color Black Forest, requiring 1 skein, with embroidery floss; paired with 6/0 Seed Beads in Silver Lined Crystal A/B (approximately 400 beads from 1–35g container)

All versions require one 80cm/32" circular needle in 3.5mm/US #4 size, or a circular needle of preferred style, and a 0.6mm/14US crochet hook for inserting beads into the knitted fabric.
