Product Description

This cute mermaid is a chocolate cover. I have put a Creme Egg chocolate in the inside but any similar sweet could be used. This makes a stunning addition to your Easter table, a fantastic fund raising item for fayres and bazaar's or great as a novelty decoration or egg hunt.

This listing, is for the pattern only and not for the item itself.

This pattern is printed on a laminated sheet.

Ariel The Little Mermaid Creme Egg Choc Cover

Project Overview

This is a beginner-friendly knitted cover designed to fit over a Creme Egg chocolate, featuring Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Created by designer Andrew Lucas, this small decorative project combines basic knitting techniques to construct a charming mermaid-themed accessory. The finished piece showcases a mermaid tail in green with a beige face and head section, complete with colorful details for hair and facial features.

What Is Being Made

A small knitted Creme Egg cover shaped like Ariel the mermaid character. The project creates a three-dimensional decorative covering that slips over a standard Creme Egg chocolate, making it an ideal craft for fans of Disney's The Little Mermaid or as a unique gift item. The finished piece combines the mermaid's iconic green tail with a contrasting beige skin tone for the head and upper body.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Increases (m1): Make one increase by knitting into the back of the loop between two stitches, used to expand the width of the piece during the tail shaping
  • Decreases (k2tog): Knit two stitches together to reduce stitch count and shape the narrower head section
  • Casting on and binding off: Standard cast-on method to begin the project and bind and tie (B and T) finishing technique using a tapestry needle to close off stitches and secure the piece
  • Yarn color changes: Strategic switching between green wool for the tail and beige wool for the face and head creates the character's distinctive two-tone appearance

Stitches Used

  • Garter stitch (gs): Created by knitting every row, this stitch provides a textured, bumpy fabric used for the tail base and sections of the head
  • Stocking stitch (st st): Alternating knit and purl rows to create a smooth, flat fabric used for the face and upper body sections where a refined appearance is desired

Materials Required

This project requires 3.25mm knitting needles and double knitting wool in multiple colors: green for the mermaid tail, beige for the face and head, red for lips or hair details, purple for additional embellishment, yellow for highlights, and black for eyes and facial features. Oddments or small leftover amounts of each color are sufficient. A small amount of polyester stuffing is needed to give the cover three-dimensional shape and structure. A tapestry needle is used for the bind and tie finishing technique and for weaving in yarn ends.

Construction Method

The project begins by casting on 7 stitches in green wool and working in garter stitch. Increases are worked strategically across rows to expand the stitch count from 7 to 13 to 19 to 25 stitches, creating the widest point of the mermaid tail. After establishing the tail width with garter stitch rows, the yarn is changed to beige and worked in stocking stitch to create the smoother face section. The piece then returns to green garter stitch before switching back to beige stocking stitch. Decreases are introduced to narrow the piece from 25 stitches down to 19 and finally to 13 stitches, shaping the head. The pattern indicates additional color work and stuffing to complete the three-dimensional mermaid form, with colorful yarn details added for hair and facial features like eyes and mouth.

Difficulty Level

This is a beginner-level knitting project suitable for those new to the craft. It uses only fundamental techniques including basic increases and decreases, simple stitch patterns, and straightforward color changes. The small size of the finished project makes it manageable for developing knitting skills without requiring extensive time commitment.
