Product Description
This is a patter for a knit wrap that features two stitches that come to us from Japan. The focal stitch features on of the many lace leaf patterns. The long intricate border stitch makes quite a statement. Both stitches are interesting and fun to knit. Combined, they make a beautiful shawl. The stitches, although they are Japanese, are easily learned by American knitters, especially those who love knitting lace. All symbols used are the ones familiar to Western knitters. Contained within the pattern are instructions for an optional crocheted edging.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of lace knitting).
The two stitches are both charted and written out line by line.
The sample was knit with Lorna's Laces Sportmate yarn, but any heavy fingering yarn or sport weight yarn will work for this pattern.
If you don't want to edge the shawl, you don't need crochet hooks
Are You Leafing Me Shawl by Linda Lehman
Project Overview
The Are You Leafing Me Shawl is a light and lacy summer wrap designed by Linda Lehman that combines sophisticated stitch techniques to create an eye-catching wearable. This knitted shawl is engineered to provide warmth without weight, making it ideal for air-conditioned environments or cool summer evenings. The design showcases two distinct and unique stitches that work together to form an elegant finished piece.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project features two primary focal stitches that define its character. The main body of the shawl showcases a leaf stitch, which is one of many variations in the leaf stitch family. This stitch creates the visual interest and lacy quality of the wrap. The border incorporates a more complex technique that combines a Japanese ladder stitch with a mock cable stitch, adding textural depth and a refined finishing detail to the edges.
The combination of these techniques requires intermediate knitting skills and familiarity with specialty stitches. Knitters will work with standard knitting needles throughout the main construction and will need to use a cable needle to execute the mock cable portions of the border stitch.
Materials and Tools Required
For the Main Wrap:
- 1100 to 1250 yards of heavy fingering weight yarn or sport weight yarn
- Size US #5 (3.5mm) knitting needles
- One spare size US #5 (3.5mm) needle for holding stitches
- Cable needle for executing cable stitches
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
For the Edging:
- Approximately 100 yards of the same or matching yarn
- Size H crochet hook (5mm)
- Size I crochet hook (5.75mm)
Note: Crocheters with particularly tight or loose tension should adjust hook sizes accordingly to achieve proper stitch definition in the edging.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 5 stitches to the inch in the border stitch when aggressively blocked. While gauge is noted as not being critically important for this particular design, knitters who do not knit to gauge should be aware that the finished dimensions of the wrap may vary from the intended size.
Design Format
This shawl pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it easy to access and reference while working on your project. The format allows knitters to print the pattern or view it digitally at their convenience.
