Product Description
This cosy blanket will keep little ones snug and warm in their prams with a beautifully simple pattern that it easy to make but still looks amazing. I have designed this pattern that uses knit and purl stitches only so if you are new to knitting it is the ideal starter blanket and if you are more experienced you can sit and relax while you make something lovely. If you want to make a larger blanket, I have explained how to modify the blanket in the pattern so you could even make one as a treat for yourself!
I have used Paintbox yarns in this pattern which come in LOTS of fabulous colours. It is one of my favourite yarns because its reasonably price yet still incredibly soft and always receives compliments whether it is a vibrant colour like Mustard Yellow or softer tones like this Dusty Pink yarn. I have also included by email address in the pattern so if you have any questions about the pattern or need any help, please feel free to get in touch.
Enjoy!
Aran Moss Stitch Stripe Blanket by Nicola Taylor
What is Being Made
This is a cosy knitted blanket designed for babies and small children, measuring 35 inches by 30 inches when finished. The blanket is intended to keep little ones snug and warm in their prams while featuring an attractive striped pattern. The design is also suitable for adults who wish to make a larger version as a personal throw.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Aran Moss Stitch Stripe Blanket uses a deliberately simplified stitch construction to make the project accessible and relaxing to work on. The pattern employs only knit and purl stitches, eliminating complex stitch techniques that might intimidate beginner knitters. This straightforward approach allows crafters to focus on rhythm and relaxation while creating a visually stunning finished piece.
The moss stitch creates texture through alternating knit and purl stitches in a way that produces a subtle, bumpy surface. When worked in stripes, this stitch pattern generates visual interest and dimension without requiring advanced techniques.
Pattern Flexibility and Customization
The pattern is designed with scalability in mind. The stitch pattern grows in multiples of 2, allowing knitters to easily adjust the blanket size by increasing the number of cast-on stitches in multiples of 2. When using Paintbox Simply Aran Yarn, every 18 stitches will add approximately 4 inches to the width of the blanket, making it simple to calculate adjustments for a larger throw.
Materials
This project is worked in aran weight yarn, which is a medium-weight yarn that works up quickly and creates a warm, substantial fabric ideal for blankets. The pattern specifically references Paintbox Simply Aran Yarn as a suitable yarn choice. Knitters will need appropriate needles for aran weight yarn, though specific needle size recommendations are referenced in the full pattern document.
Difficulty Level
This blanket is rated as a beginner project, making it an excellent choice for knitters who are new to the craft or those seeking a straightforward, meditative knitting experience. The reliance on fundamental knit and purl stitches means that even novice knitters can successfully complete this project.
