Aprilis Beanie by IsolaHandmade
What Is Being Made
The Aprilis Beanie is a lightweight spring hat designed by Kali Sierra Berg and named after the month of April and the Latin word for spring. This knitted beanie is sized to fit teen to adult head circumferences of 20–23 inches, making it a versatile accessory for the transitional spring season. The hat is constructed using DK weight yarn, which creates a breathable, comfortable garment perfect for layering in mild weather.
Techniques Used
The Aprilis Beanie employs the Estonian cast-on method, a traditional technique that produces both a stretchy and decorative edge. This cast-on method is particularly valued for its elasticity and visual appeal, making it an excellent choice for hat openings that need to accommodate various head sizes while maintaining a polished appearance. The pattern also incorporates in-the-round knitting, a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments like beanies.
Stitches Used
The Aprilis Beanie utilizes fundamental knitting stitches to create its structure and texture:
- Stockinette stitch forms the main body of the hat, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
- Ribbing is incorporated into the design and is noted for being stretchy and forgiving, allowing flexibility in fit
- Knit two together (K2tog) decreases are used to shape the crown of the beanie
- Slip stitch (SL1) is employed as needed in the pattern construction
Materials and Tools
The Aprilis Beanie requires DK weight yarn, with the pattern calling for 1 skein to complete the project. The pattern was photographed using Cedar House Yearling DK in the Sunstone colorway. Knitters will need US 4 circular needles for the ribbed sections and US 6 circular needles for the main stockinette body. Double-pointed needles in US 6 are optional for working the crown decreases. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and a measuring tape for checking gauge and fit.
Gauge and Difficulty
The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 5 stitches per inch when worked in stockinette stitch using US 6 needles. The ribbing sections are noted as stretchy and very forgiving, which helps accommodate minor gauge variations. Rated as an intermediate-level project, the Aprilis Beanie is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working in the round and executing basic decreases.
