Apple Blossom Shawl by Anne Podlesak

Project Overview

The Apple Blossom Shawl is an elegant, elongated crescent-shaped knit shawl designed by Anne Podlesak. This beginner-friendly knitting project features a sophisticated two-color construction that creates visual interest through contrasting yarn colors and decorative stitch work. The shawl is worked from the center back neck downward to the hem, resulting in a graceful garment that drapes beautifully across the shoulders and back.

Finished Dimensions

The completed shawl measures 21 inches (53.25 cm) from back neck to hem and spans 92 inches (233.5 cm) across the wingspan when fully blocked. These generous dimensions make the Apple Blossom Shawl a versatile accessory suitable for layering over various outfits.

Yarn and Materials

This design calls for 4-ply fingering weight yarn, with the sample created using Wooly Wonka Fibers Nimue Sock in two coordinating colors: Chawton Cottage (Color A) and Willow (Color B). One skein of each color, totaling 435 yards per 100-gram skein, is required to complete the project. Additional materials include US size 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches or longer for initial shaping, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and a darning needle for finishing and weaving in ends.

Needles and Gauge

The project utilizes two needle sizes during construction. US size 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles are used for the initial sections, with an upgrade to US size 6 (4 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches or longer as the shawl expands to accommodate the increasing number of stitches. The working gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) over Stockinette stitch after blocking.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Apple Blossom Shawl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance:

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch structure forms the foundation of the shawl, creating a smooth, classic fabric base
  • Stripe Pattern: A simple stockinette stripe pattern in the two contrasting yarn colors provides visual definition and design interest throughout the piece
  • Eyelet Lace Motifs: Decorative eyelet lace elements are incorporated into the design, adding delicate texture and a refined aesthetic
  • Eyelet Border: An eyelet border frames the hem of the shawl, enhancing the elegant finish
  • Picot Bind-Off: The shawl features a picot bind-off technique at the hem, creating a pretty, decorative edge with small loops that adds a sophisticated finishing touch

Shaping and Construction

The shawl's distinctive crescent shape is achieved through strategic increases worked on both right-side and wrong-side rows. This two-directional increase pattern creates the gradual expansion from the narrow back neck to the wide wingspan, resulting in the elegant draped silhouette characteristic of crescent shawls. The construction method of working from center back neck downward allows knitters to easily adjust the finished length if desired.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner-level project, the Apple Blossom Shawl is accessible to knitters new to shawl construction while still offering opportunities to develop skills in lace work, color work, and garment shaping. The straightforward stitch patterns and clear construction method make this an ideal introduction to shawl knitting.
