Product Description
This pattern is now part of an eBook collection that includes an Infinity Scarf and Cowl as well as additional directions for making this headband from bulky as well as worsted weight yarn.
A great last minute gift with simple cables and a slipped stitch icord edge. Knits up very quickly.
This headband was inspired by 'that certain store'. It is a great way to use up the odd bit of 'good' yarn you have leftover from a project or a fabulous excuse to treat yourself to a short-yardage skein of opulent yarn.
Skill level: Advanced beginner. There are links to tutorials for a provisional cast-on and the kitchener stitch.
Clarification: The provisional cast on row is row 0. You begin Row 1 after that cast on row. You always slip the last two stitches of each row with the yarn toward the back side (the wrong side) of the headband. This forms the icord.
Anthropomorphic Headband by sowhynot designs
Project Overview
The Anthropomorphic Headband is a quick, one-skein knitting project designed by Laura Olsavsky of sowhynot designs. This beginner-friendly headwear piece takes inspiration from a high-end retail design, offering crafters an accessible way to create a stylish accessory at a fraction of the cost. The finished headband measures 3.5 inches by 22 inches when un-stretched and is sized to fit most head sizes.
What You Will Make
This project produces a finished headband suitable for everyday wear. The design is compact and portable, making it an ideal choice for using up leftover yarn from larger projects or for experimenting with luxury yarns in smaller quantities without requiring a significant yardage commitment.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 100 yards of worsted-weight yarn. The pattern was created using The Fiber Company Canopy Worsted in the colorway Quetzal, though any worsted-weight yarn of similar yardage will work for this project.
- Needles: Circular needle or waste yarn for provisional cast on method, depending on your preferred casting technique.
Knitting Techniques Used
This beginner-level project incorporates fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The pattern uses a provisional cast on, which allows for a seamless or flexible edge finish. Crafters will work with both right-side and wrong-side rows, building familiarity with directional knitting and reading row-by-row instructions.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Knit stitch (k): The primary stitch used throughout the headband.
- Purl stitch (p): Used to create textural contrast and definition in the design.
- Slip stitch (sl): Employed at the edges for a neat, finished appearance.
- Cable stitch (6/6 RC): A six-over-six right cross cable appears in Row 5, adding visual interest and dimension to the headband's surface.
Pattern Structure
The written instructions include a charted component (provided on page 2 of the pattern). Knitters will cast on 24 stitches and work in rows, alternating between right-side and wrong-side rows. The pattern establishes a rhythm with edge stitches (k2 and sl2) framing the central design area. The cable cross is introduced in Row 5 and creates a focal point in the finished piece. The repeating row sequences build the headband to its finished dimensions.
Why Choose This Pattern
Designed in 2012-2021 by sowhynot designs, this pattern offers excellent value for knitters seeking a quick, satisfying project. It demonstrates how accessible design inspiration can be transformed into an affordable, handmade alternative to retail products. The one-skein requirement makes it perfect for stash busting or for trying new yarns without overcommitting yardage.
