Product Description

Anthousai, named for the flower nymphs of Ancient Greece, is a top down crescent shawl. It has a modified dayflower lace pattern forming the vines climbing up from the border of the shawl. The border creates a gentle ruffle along the edge.

The shawl is available in two sizes. The large size is knit in Fyberspates Rural Charm BFL Silk Cashmere, in green and uses 760 yards of yarn, and the smaller size is Eden Cottage Yarns Titus 4ply, in orange and uses 437 yards.

The pattern includes both charts and written instructions, so however you like to read your patterns, you’re covered! The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted. There’s a screenshot of the pattern and a list of the stitches used at the bottom of the photos. These additional techniques are used: provisional cast on, garter stitch tab and stretchy cast off.

What is Being Made

The Anthousai Shawl is a top-down half-circle shawl inspired by the flower nymphs of Ancient Greek mythology. This downloadable knitting pattern offers two size options: a smaller version perfect for showcasing a special one-of-a-kind skein, and a larger version for a more generous finished piece. The large size measures 170 cm long by 63.5 cm deep (67 inches long by 25 inches deep).

Techniques and Stitch Work

The Anthousai Shawl features a modified dayflower lace pattern that forms decorative vines climbing upward from the border of the shawl. The construction method is top-down, which allows knitters to work from the center outward and adjust the final size as desired. A gentle ruffle is created along the edge, adding delicate movement and visual interest to the finished garment. The main body is worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth, classic fabric base that allows the lace motif to stand out.

Yarn and Materials

This intermediate-level pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, offering flexibility in yarn choice. The pattern suggests two high-quality yarn options:

  • Eden Cottage Yarns Titus 4ply: 70% Merino/30% silk blend, requiring 400 meters (437 yards) for the small size or 695 meters (760 yards) for the large size, at 437 yards per 100 grams
  • Fyberspates Rural Charm in BFL Silk Cashmere: 70% BFL/20% Silk/10% Cashmere blend, with the same yardage requirements at 439 yards per 100 grams

Tools and Notions

To complete the Anthousai Shawl, knitters will need 4mm (US 6) circular needles in either 61 cm (24 inches) or 102 cm (40 inches) length, depending on the size being worked. Additional supplies include 8 to 10 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and a blocking mat with pins to shape and finish the shawl.

Gauge and Sizing

The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 31 rows in 10 cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch. While gauge is not considered essential for this project, variations in gauge will affect both the finished size of the shawl and the total yardage required, making it a flexible pattern suitable for different yarn weights and personal preferences.
