Anouk Headband by Renee Kies
What is Being Made
The Anouk Headband is a knitted headwear accessory designed by Renee Kies. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a comfortable, stretchy band that wraps around the head, measuring approximately 15½ inches in its relaxed state and stretching to 22–23 inches when worn. The headband features a classic ribbed texture that provides both visual interest and functional stretch for a secure, comfortable fit.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The construction begins with a long-tail cast-on method, which creates a sturdy, elastic foundation edge ideal for a wearable headband. The main body is worked in a repeating ribbed stitch pattern, which alternates knit and purl stitches to create vertical columns of texture. This ribbed construction provides natural elasticity, allowing the finished headband to stretch comfortably around the head without losing its shape. The pattern is completed with a bind-off worked in pattern, maintaining the ribbed texture at the finishing edge. The two pieces are then seamed together using a darning needle and yarn, creating a continuous band. This straightforward construction method makes the project accessible while producing a polished, professional-looking finished garment.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch that forms the base of the fabric
- Purl (p) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used in alternation to create the ribbed texture
Pattern Structure
The Anouk Headband pattern is worked flat on straight needles over 14 cast-on stitches. The core pattern consists of two alternating rows: Row 1 works knit 1, purl 1 across the entire row, while Row 2 reverses this sequence with purl 1, knit 1. These two rows are repeated 53 times total, creating 106 rows of continuous ribbed fabric. Knitters are advised to track their progress on scrap paper to ensure accuracy. The finished piece measures 15½ inches before stretching, with the ribbed construction allowing it to expand to 22–23 inches when worn. Knitters can try the piece on during construction to verify the fit and add additional row repeats if needed for a looser, more comfortable stretch.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Aran weight yarn is required for this project. The sample was created using Zeeman Tweed in colour 01, requiring approximately 80–100 meters of yarn. Aran weight yarn provides the ideal thickness for creating a headband with good drape and elasticity.
Needles and Notions: The pattern calls for 6 mm straight knitting needles, which are appropriately sized for aran weight yarn. A darning needle with a large eye is essential for weaving in yarn ends and seaming the two pieces of the headband together. Scissors are needed for cutting yarn.
