Andromeda Shawl by Tori Gurbisz
What is Being Made
The Andromeda shawl is a crescent-shaped shawlette designed by Tori Gurbisz and presented by Lachesis and Co. Named after the mythological figure Andromeda who was chained as a sacrifice to the sea monster Cetus, this knit accessory combines storytelling with wearable art. The shawl features a dramatic crescent silhouette that drapes beautifully as a shoulder wrap or statement piece.
Design Inspiration and Aesthetic
The pattern draws inspiration from Greek mythology, specifically the tragic tale of Andromeda's sacrifice and her rescue by Perseus. The lace and cable motifs are intentionally designed to mimic the swirling waters where Andromeda was chained, creating a visual narrative through the knitted fabric. This thematic approach transforms the shawl into more than a functional garment—it becomes a wearable story.
Sizing and Finished Dimensions
The Andromeda shawl is available in two yarn weight options, each producing different finished dimensions:
- DK Weight Version: 65 inches (165 cm) wingspan with a 16-inch (41 cm) depth
- Fingering Weight Version: 60 inches (152 cm) wingspan with an 18-inch (46 cm) depth
The generous wingspan makes this shawlette suitable for layering over shoulders or wearing as a dramatic wrap, while the moderate depth provides comfortable coverage without excessive bulk.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Andromeda shawl employs two primary knitting techniques to achieve its aesthetic: lace knitting and cable knitting. The lace elements create openwork sections that evoke flowing water, while cable stitches add textural depth and structure. These techniques work in concert to produce a fabric with both visual interest and dimensional appeal.
Yarn Weight Options and Gauge
This pattern is designed to work with two distinct yarn weights, offering flexibility for different preferences and stash utilization:
- DK Weight: Gauge of 15 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch
- Fingering Weight: Gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch
The pattern notes that gauge is not crucial to this project, making it forgiving for knitters with varying tension. However, knitters with tight tension or those desiring a more open, lacy fabric are encouraged to go up one to two needle sizes from the recommended size. Washing and blocking a gauge swatch is recommended to ensure satisfaction with the final fabric appearance and drape.
Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements
Rated as an intermediate-level pattern, the Andromeda shawl is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle lace and cable work. The intermediate classification reflects the complexity of working with both lace decreases and cable twists, though the forgiving gauge requirements make the pattern more accessible than some advanced designs.
Pattern Format and Customization
The Andromeda shawl is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it immediately accessible for digital devices. A key feature of this pattern is its adjustability—the instructions include guidance for both fingering and DK weight yarns, allowing knitters to choose based on their yarn stash, desired finished size, and preferred fabric weight. This flexibility extends the pattern's appeal across a range of knitter preferences and project goals.
