Anahata Yoga Socks by N.kaBia
What is Being Made
The Anahata Yoga socks are a knitted sock design created as a downloadable PDF pattern by independent designer N.kaBia. This project produces a complete pair of socks available in four size options: EU 36/37, 38/39, 40/41, 42/43, and 44/45. The socks feature a two-color stranded knitting technique that creates visual interest throughout the leg and foot.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level sock pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:
- Circular knitting in the round using double-pointed needles, which is the traditional method for constructing seamless socks
- Color work involving alternating between two solid colorways (color A and color B) to create patterned sections
- Stranded knitting where the pattern is worked from a chart, carrying yarn colors across rounds to build the design
- Ribbing for the cuff section, which provides elasticity and helps the socks stay in place
- Cable needle work, indicating the inclusion of cable stitches for textural detail
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The sock construction begins with a knit 2, purl 2 ribbing pattern worked over rounds 1-20 for the cuff. This classic ribbed cuff provides stretch and recovery. Following the cuff, the pattern transitions to charted colorwork in the leg section, where 30 stitches in the middle of the needle carry the primary design motif. The combination of knit stitches with the cable needle work creates dimension and visual complexity suitable for an intermediate knitter.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Anahata Yoga socks require 100 grams total of fingering weight 4-ply sockyarn, divided into two 50-gram skeins of different solid colorways. This yardage totals approximately 420 meters (459 yards), which is standard for a sock pair. The 4-ply weight ensures durability and the characteristic dense fabric needed for socks.
Essential tools include 5 double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size 2.5mm (US 1.5), which is the appropriate needle size for fingering weight yarn and creates the correct gauge for well-fitting socks. Additional supplies needed are a cable needle for cable stitch sections, 2 stitch markers (optional but helpful for tracking pattern repeats), and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends after completion.
Construction Method
The sock is constructed from the cuff downward. Stitches are cast on and divided evenly across 4 needles, with the cast-on tail positioned between needle 1 and needle 4 to mark the beginning of rounds. The cuff is worked entirely in color A with knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 20 rounds. Once the cuff is complete, the leg section begins with alternating colors in every round, transitioning from solid-color ribbing to the charted colorwork pattern that defines the sock's visual design.
