Product Description
just find amoeba fascinating - mostly because they can change their shape by extending and retracting pseudopods. Yikes!
This little critter is an Amoeba proteus, otherwise known as a ‘giant’ amoeba. Maybe you’ve even peered at one at school?! It has a little purple nucleus, yellow food vacuoles (just what HAS it been eating!) and a couple of white contractile vacuoles.
What you will need:
2 knitting needles (US3/3.25mm or as per tension advice), 1 knitting needle of the same size or stitch holder (optional), 10g blue DK yarn (e.g. Sirdar Snuggly DK 486 ‘Peek a Boo’), Oddment of purple DK yarn (e.g. Sirdar Snuggly DK 474 ‘Flower Girl’), Oddment of yellow DK yarn (e.g. Sirdar Snuggly DK 252 ‘Lemon’), Oddment of white DK yarn (e.g. Sirdar Snuggly DK 251 ‘White’), 2 black toy safety eyes (6mm), 1 tapestry needle for finishing, Polyfil toy stuffing

Amoeba proteus Knitted Toy by ButterflyLove1
What is Being Made
The Amoeba proteus is a knitted stuffed toy designed by Dawn Finney that recreates the single-celled organism in textile form. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a small sculptural piece approximately 4 inches (10cm) in length, featuring a main cytoplasm body with protruding pseudopods that give the amoeba its characteristic irregular shape.
Construction Method
The amoeba is constructed as a single knitted piece with the main body worked flat on two needles, with i-cord pseudopods created at one end. The sides of the finished piece are then sewn together, and the form is stuffed to create a three-dimensional toy before final closure.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for an intermediate crafter:
- Stocking stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) forms the main fabric of the amoeba body
- Increases created by knitting into the front and back of individual stitches to shape the form
- I-cord technique used to create the pseudopods, which are the characteristic arm-like projections of the organism
- Seaming to join the sides of the knitted piece together
Yarn and Needle Specifications
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, which is a light worsted yarn suitable for detailed work. The designer recommends using knitting needles two to three sizes smaller than the yarn's recommended needle size to create a tightly knit weave. For example, if DK yarn typically recommends US6 (4mm) needles, the pattern specifies using US3 (3.25mm) needles. This intentional gauge adjustment ensures the stuffing does not show through the finished fabric, creating a neat, professional appearance.
Tension and Sizing
Working to a tension of 28 stitches and 37 rows to a 4-inch (10cm) square using US3 (3.25mm) needles will produce an amoeba approximately 4 inches (10cm) long. The final length may vary depending on the length of the pseudopods created during construction.
Pattern Abbreviations
- K – Knit
- P – Purl
- Inc – Increase (by knitting into the front and back of the stitch)
- Tog – Together
- St st – Stocking stitch
Materials Required
Crafters will need two knitting needles in US3 (3.25mm) size for the main construction, with the option of using a stitch holder or additional needle of the same size for managing stitches during assembly. Stuffing material is required to fill the completed form before final seaming.
