Product Description
This adorable cow stacks up at 11 inches tall! Travis is a fantastic beginning project for felting: it's so easy! You crochet the pieces from a wool yarn, and then toss them in the washing machine, and magic happens! This project is crocheted holding two strands of yarn together and a big hook, so it works up fast. And because this cow is felted, it's very durable and huggable.
To complete this pattern, you will need:
- size L (8 mm) crochet hook
- 3 colors of worsted weight 100% wool yarn (we use Ella Rae Classic): white (660 yards), black and beige (less than 100 yards each)
- two 18mm brown animal eyes
- polyester stuffing
- sewing needle
- like-colored sewing thread
This is an 'easy' level pattern. Pdf contains progress photos.
Amigurumi Travis the Felted Cow
What Is Being Made
Travis the Felted Cow is a crocheted amigurumi toy designed by Stacey Trock. This stuffed animal stands approximately 11 inches tall and was originally created in February 2010. The finished piece is a three-dimensional cow figure created through crochet construction followed by felting to achieve a soft, textured finish characteristic of felted wool toys.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method, classified as an intermediate difficulty pattern. The design employs the amigurumi technique, which involves crocheting in continuous rounds to create stuffed, sculptural forms. A key distinguishing feature of this pattern is the felting process—after the crocheted pieces are completed and assembled, they are felted to create a denser, more finished appearance. The pattern specifically directs stitches into the back loop throughout most of the construction, which creates a textured surface ideal for felting.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for amigurumi construction:
- Chain (ch)—used for foundation and shaping
- Single crochet (sc)—the primary stitch for building the amigurumi structure
- Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog)—used for decreasing stitches and shaping body parts
- Double crochet (dc)—provides additional stitch variety for construction
- Slip stitch (sl st)—used to join rounds and finish sections
Materials and Yarn
The pattern requires 100% wool worsted weight yarn that is suitable for felting. The sample uses Ella Rae Classic yarn in three colors: white (color #01) for the main color, black (color #32) for secondary details, and beige (color #23) for accent details. Total yardage needed is approximately 3 skeins of the main color (220 yards each) plus less than 1 skein each of the secondary and accent colors.
Additional materials include a size L crochet hook, handfuls of polyester stuffing for filling the amigurumi, two 18mm brown animal eyes, a brown animal nose, like-colored sewing thread, and a sewing needle for assembly and attaching facial features. The choice of 100% wool is essential, as the pattern specifically notes that any worsted weight yarn that will felt may be substituted, emphasizing that felting capability is a critical material requirement for achieving the intended finished appearance.
