Whoooo doesn't love owls? (sorry, but the bad owl pun is required!)
This adorable owl is alert, but not too noisy! Nelson measures about 7.5 inches tall when completed. He's the perfect decoration for any nursery, or snuggly toy for your favorite little one.
To complete this pattern, you will need:
- size H (5 mm) crochet hook
- 4 colors of worsted weight yarn (less than a skein of each): white, brown, orange and yellow
- polyester stuffing
- two 12mm black animal eyes
- tapestry needle
If you are crocheting this pattern for someone under the age of 3, I recommend embroidering or crocheting the eyes.
This is an intermediate pattern, requiring single crochet, increasing and decreasing and color changes. The pdf contains progress photos, and you
Amigurumi Nelson the Owl Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Nelson the Owl is a charming amigurumi toy designed by Stacey Trock. This stuffed crochet owl stands 7.5 inches tall and was originally created in April 2009. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small, three-dimensional stuffed animals and toys, making Nelson an ideal project for crafters interested in creating handmade plush companions.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The pattern is designed to be versatile with yarn weight options. While the sample is crocheted in worsted weight yarn, the instructions note that this pattern can be adapted to work with any yarn weight by using the hook recommended on the yarn's ball band and adjusting as needed. For crafters seeking a larger, more cuddly version, the pattern accommodates bulky weight yarn, though this will require additional yardage beyond the standard recommendations.
Stitches Used
Nelson the Owl employs fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for amigurumi construction:
- Chain (ch): The foundation stitch used to begin crochet projects
- Single crochet (sc): A basic short stitch used for creating dense, structured fabric ideal for stuffed toys
- Double crochet (dc): A taller stitch that adds variation to the fabric texture
- Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the amigurumi and create the three-dimensional form
Materials and Yarn
The pattern requires the following materials for completion:
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in multiple colors. The sample uses Ella Rae Classic (100% wool) in Brown Heather (color #124) for the main color (120 yards), White (color #01) for secondary color (40 yards), and Orange (color #) for accent color
- Hook: Size H crochet hook (hook size may be adjusted based on yarn weight used)
- Notions: Two 12mm black animal eyes for facial features
- Tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembling pieces
- Stuffing: A few handfuls of fiberfill or polyester stuffing to fill the completed toy
Difficulty Level
Nelson the Owl is rated as an intermediate difficulty project, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle shaping techniques and three-dimensional construction. The use of decreases (sc2tog) and the assembly of multiple pieces into a cohesive toy form require some experience beyond beginner-level projects.
