Amigurumi Kitten Cat Pattern - Bracken by Patchwork Moose
What Is Being Made
Bracken is a crocheted amigurumi kitten cat toy designed by Kate E Hancock. This small stuffed toy measures approximately 5-6 inches (12-15 centimeters) when sitting, making it an ideal size for a decorative piece or child-friendly plaything. The pattern uses DK weight yarn and intermediate-level crochet techniques to create a three-dimensional feline figure.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This amigurumi pattern employs the fundamental technique of crocheting in tight, continuous rounds to create a seamless, stuffed toy structure. The tight tension is essential in amigurumi construction to prevent toy filling from showing through the fabric. The designer provides specific guidance on yarn and hook selection to maintain proper tension—if substituting yarn weights, crafters should use a slightly smaller hook than typically recommended for that yarn weight to achieve the necessary density.
The pattern is written using US crochet terminology, which is important for international crafters to note when following instructions. Assembly involves stuffing the crocheted pieces with toy filling and joining components together to form the complete kitten figure.
Stitches Used
While the PDF excerpt does not detail every individual stitch, amigurumi patterns of this type typically employ fundamental crochet stitches including single crochet for tight fabric construction, increases and decreases for shaping, and slip stitches for joining rounds. The pattern uses stitch markers to track the beginning of each round during construction.
Materials and Tools Required
- 50g ball of DK weight yarn in Main Colour (Yarn A)
- 50g ball of DK weight yarn in Contrast Colour (Yarn B)
- 3.5mm (E) crochet hook for main construction
- 3.25mm (D) crochet hook (optional, for crochet eyes)
- Toy filling for stuffing
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembly
- Stitch marker for tracking rounds

- Eye options: either 2 x 20mm safety eyes or small amounts of black and coloured yarn for crocheted eyes
Design Considerations
The pattern offers flexibility in eye construction, with two options available: safety eyes for durability or crocheted eyes for a softer, child-safe alternative. The designer specifically recommends using the crochet eyes version for toys intended for small children. The finished size can be adjusted by changing yarn weight and hook size, though this requires understanding how these modifications affect the final dimensions. The pattern is presented in downloadable PDF format for easy reference during the crafting process.
