Product Description
To celebrate 72nd anniversary of the NHS, and in respect of those key workers who have worked through this pandemic, I have pulled together an amigurumi key worker nurse.
Amigurumi Keyworker by Samigurumi Knit Designs
What is Being Made
The Amigurumi Keyworker is a small knitted doll designed to celebrate healthcare workers and key workers. This finished amigurumi figure measures approximately 9cm (3.5 inches) tall and represents a nurse character. The project is created as a tribute to the 72nd anniversary of the NHS and honors those key workers who served during the pandemic.
Craft and Construction Technique
This project uses the amigurumi knitting technique, which is a Japanese method of creating small, stuffed knitted toys and dolls. Amigurumi projects are typically worked in the round or in flat pieces that are subsequently sewn together. The Amigurumi Keyworker is constructed by knitting individual body parts—including legs, body, head, hands, and ears—which are then assembled and stuffed to create a three-dimensional figure. The doll features color changes throughout the construction to define different body parts, such as black for shoes, skin-tone yarn for the head and hands, white for the face mask, and additional yarn colors for hair details.
Stitches and Abbreviations Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for amigurumi construction:
- Cast On (CO) – Used to create the initial stitches at the beginning of each piece
- Knit (K) – The basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric
- Purl (P) – The reverse of the knit stitch, used to create textural variation
- Stocking Stitch/Stockinette (SS) – A fundamental stitch pattern created by alternating knit and purl rows, producing a smooth, flat fabric ideal for amigurumi
- Knit Front and Back (KFB) – An increase technique that creates two stitches from one, used to shape the doll's contours
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog) – A decrease technique that combines two stitches into one, essential for shaping and tapering the doll's limbs and body
Materials and Tools
The Amigurumi Keyworker pattern specifies the following materials and equipment:
- Yarn: James Brett Top Value Double Knitting wool in multiple colors including white (for the face mask), skin-tone (for head, hands, and ears), hair color, and black (for shoes). Double knitting (DK) weight yarn provides an appropriate thickness for creating a small, detailed doll with good stitch definition
- Needles: 3mm knitting needles, sized appropriately for DK weight yarn to achieve proper gauge and fabric density
- Notions: Toy stuffing material to fill the knitted pieces and create the three-dimensional form, a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction, and a darning needle for seaming pieces together and weaving in yarn ends
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the stitches used are fundamental, the project requires experience with color changes, shaping techniques using increases and decreases, assembling multiple pieces, and the spatial awareness needed to construct a recognizable three-dimensional figure. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions and managing multiple yarn colors throughout the project.
