Amigurumi Ivo the Seahorse Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Ivo the Seahorse is an amigurumi toy designed by Stacey Trock. This stuffed crochet seahorse stands 14.5 inches tall and was originally created in July 2011. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional toys and figurines, making this project perfect for crafters looking to create a cuddly, huggable handmade companion.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques. The pattern uses the classic method of crocheting in continuous rounds to build three-dimensional forms, then stuffing and shaping each component before assembly. The design demonstrates proper stitch tension and shaping techniques essential for creating well-proportioned amigurumi toys with clean, professional-looking results.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) - Foundation stitches used to begin sections of the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc) - The primary stitch throughout the pattern, creating a tight, dense fabric ideal for stuffed toys
- Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) - Decreasing stitch used to shape and reduce stitches, essential for forming the seahorse's body contours
- Slip Stitch (sl st) - Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between pattern sections
Materials and Yarn
The pattern is designed with flexibility in yarn weight. The sample is crocheted in worsted weight yarn using Ella Rae Classic (100% wool). The color requirements include approximately 220 yards of yellow for the main color (MC), 10 yards of white for accents (SC), and black yarn for additional details (AC). A size H crochet hook is recommended for the worsted weight sample, though crafters can adjust hook size based on the recommended hook size on alternative yarn ball bands.
Additional materials needed include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembling pieces, two 12mm black animal eyes for facial features, and fiberfill stuffing to fill the completed seahorse form. For a larger, extra-cuddly version, the pattern accommodates bulky weight yarn, though this will require increased yardage compared to the worsted weight recommendation.
Pattern Flexibility and Customization
One of the strengths of this amigurumi pattern is its adaptability. Crafters can use any weight yarn by simply selecting the appropriate hook size according to the yarn's ball band recommendations and adjusting gauge as needed. This flexibility allows makers to customize Ivo's final size and texture based on their yarn choice and personal preferences.
