Product Description

P is her parasol, all trimmed with lace

One of my favorite childhood books was “A is for Annabelle” by Tasha Tudor. As my mom would read the simple alphabet book over and over, I remember wishing that my grandmother had such an elegant doll with all of her fascinating accessories.

This sock pattern is was designed in reference to the part of book which talks about the doll’s parasol that is trimmed with lace. All Trimmed with Lace is knit toe-up with a parasol lace stitch pattern that runs up the front of the sock. The back is trimmed with your choice of lace hearts or flowers.

The pattern was written for a sock set, to use a contrast color for the cuffs, heels and toes; however this pattern is also the perfect canvas for a pair of scrappy socks.

All Trimmed with Lace Socks by Spivay Song Knits

What Is Being Made

All Trimmed with Lace is a knitted sock pattern designed by Spivay Song Knits, inspired by the elegant lace-trimmed parasol featured in Tasha Tudor's classic children's book "A is for Annabelle." These socks combine decorative lace stitch patterns with functional sock construction, making them a charming accessory that celebrates literary inspiration and detailed knitwear design.

Design Features and Construction

The socks are knit from the toe up, allowing for easy customization of fit and length. The front of each sock features a prominent parasol lace stitch pattern that creates a delicate, umbrella-inspired motif running vertically up the leg. The back of the sock is trimmed with a lace panel that offers two design options: decorative lace hearts or lace flowers. This dual-option approach provides flexibility for different aesthetic preferences and practical advantages for knitters working with variegated or scrappy yarn combinations.

The inclusion of two back lace panel options reflects thoughtful pattern design. The lace hearts were the original choice, while the lace flowers option was added to accommodate knitters who wish to work with multiple yarn colors for each parasol section without disrupting the visual continuity of the back panel. Both options match the row count of the parasol motifs, ensuring seamless integration throughout the sock.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs lace knitting techniques to create its distinctive visual elements. Lace stitching involves strategic yarn overs and decreases that form openwork patterns and create the delicate, ornamental appearance characteristic of the parasol and trim designs. The toe-up construction method provides advantages including the ability to try on the sock during knitting and precise control over the final fit.

  • Parasol lace stitch pattern on the front of the sock
  • Lace heart trim option for the back panel
  • Lace flower trim option for the back panel
  • Toe-up knitting construction method
  • Yarn over and decrease stitches for lace creation

Materials and Yarn Specifications

All Trimmed with Lace is designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn weight, also known as fingering weight. This lightweight yarn is ideal for sock knitting, providing the appropriate drape, durability, and finished fabric density needed for comfortable, long-wearing socks. The 4-ply weight allows the lace stitches to display clearly while maintaining structural integrity in a frequently-worn garment.

Knitters will need appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn, typically in smaller gauges suitable for sock construction. The pattern's flexibility with yarn color choices makes it suitable for both solid-colored yarn and scrappy or variegated yarn combinations, allowing creative personalization of the finished socks.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner-level pattern, All Trimmed with Lace is accessible to knitters new to sock construction and lace techniques. The straightforward toe-up method and clear stitch patterns provide an excellent introduction to decorative sock knitting without overwhelming complexity.
