All About Colors Knitted Shawl by Hanna Maciejewska
What is Being Made
All About Colors is a top-down crescent shawl designed by Hanna Maciejewska. This knitted accessory features a distinctive crescent shape with a finished length along the outer edge of 67.75 inches (172 centimeters) and a center depth of 24 inches (61 centimeters). The shawl is inspired by the "Toruń Shawl" and celebrates colorwork through vibrant, multicolored wavy pattern stripes combined with a decorative border.
Knitting Techniques Used
This shawl employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The construction begins with a garter stitch tab, which serves as the foundation for the top-down shawl structure. Following the initial tab, the pattern incorporates colorful wavy pattern stripes that create visual interest throughout the body of the shawl. The design concludes with a beautiful border that frames the finished piece. The top-down construction method allows knitters to try on the shawl as they work and adjust the final size if desired.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used in this design is garter stitch, which forms the foundation tab and contributes to the overall texture. The pattern incorporates wavy pattern stripes that add visual dimension and color variation throughout the shawl. These colorwork sections are combined with a specialized border pattern that completes the crescent shape.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The shawl is worked in 4-ply (fingering weight) yarn. The recommended yarn is Dye Dye Done SilkyPaca, which consists of 70% Alpaca and 30% Silk, offering a luxurious blend of softness and sheen. One skein of SilkyPaca yields 437 yards (400 meters) per 100 grams.
The pattern requires 6 different colors to create the multicolored effect. Approximate yardage needed for each color is:
- Color 1 (C1): approximately 90 yards (85 meters)
- Color 2 (C2): approximately 135 yards (125 meters)
- Color 3 (C3): approximately 135 yards (125 meters)
Any fingering weight yarn that knits to the specified gauge may be substituted for the SilkyPaca. The pattern accommodates flexibility in yarn choice, making it accessible to knitters with various yarn preferences.
Gauge and Needles
The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 36 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in garter stitch after blocking. The pattern notes that gauge is not essential for this design; however, different gauges will result in variations to the finished measurements and total yardage requirements. This flexibility makes the pattern forgiving for knitters who may not achieve exact gauge.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to shawl construction or colorwork. The straightforward garter stitch foundation combined with the top-down method provides a manageable introduction to shawl knitting without overwhelming complexity.
