Alice Pullover by Deb Hoss

What is Being Made

Alice is a figure-flattering color-block pullover sweater designed by Deb Hoss. This intermediate-level knitting project features a classic V-neckline and just-below-elbow length sleeves, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various seasons and occasions. The sweater is available in seven sizes ranging from 31 inches to 55 inches in finished bust circumference, accommodating a wide range of body types.

Design and Construction Details

The sweater showcases thoughtful color-blocking through its modular construction. The front and back center panels feature gentle shaping along their edges, creating a flattering silhouette. Side panels are worked evenly with ribbing positioned strategically at the waist to enhance the garment's shape. This design approach breaks the project into manageable, portable components, making it an excellent take-along project for knitters who enjoy working on pieces in multiple sessions.

Alice is worked bottom-up, a construction method that allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and make adjustments as needed. The panels are joined using straightforward seaming techniques. Sleeves are worked in the round using circular knitting methods and then set into the armholes with proper sleeve cap shaping for a professional finish.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic fabric
  • 1x1 ribbing – used for trim details and waist shaping, providing elasticity and structure
  • Long-tail cast-on – for beginning the project with a secure, flexible edge
  • Circular knitting – employed for sleeve construction worked in the round
  • Decreasing techniques – ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) for shaping
  • Increasing techniques – m1L (make one left) and m1R (make one right) for adding stitches where needed
  • Short-row shaping – used to create gentle shaping along the center panels
  • Three-needle bind-off – for joining seams with a secure, flexible finish
  • Stitch pick-up – for neckline trim application
  • Seaming – to join the modular panels together
  • Sleeve cap setting – for proper sleeve placement and fit
  • Blocking – finishing technique to even out stitches and set the garment's final shape

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Alice is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that creates a drapey, refined fabric suitable for a pullover with just-below-elbow sleeves. The specific yardage requirements will vary by size, with larger sizes requiring more yardage than smaller ones. Knitters will need circular needles for sleeve construction and standard needles for the body panels, with needle size determined by the specific yarn chosen to achieve the designer's intended gauge.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex shaping and construction techniques. The modular nature of the project and the inclusion of detailed shaping techniques provide an excellent opportunity for skill development while maintaining achievable progress milestones.
