Product Description
This pattern speaks to the programmer and hardware designer in me. So often, small changes in the inputs can have a big impact on outputs, even though the process remains the same.
The shawlette is an asymmetrical crescent constructed from a series of rectangles and triangles. You choose two numbers at the start of the pattern that determine how quickly it curves and how random the rectangle sizes will be.
Be aware - this is a non-traditionally written pattern. The basic knitting instructions are there, but the directions for determining when/what size to do the triangles and rectangles are written like a computer program or a process flow, with if/then and loop statements. I explain everything in the pattern, and it’s not that hard, but it may not be what you’re used to unless you’re a flow-chart junkie. Please read the Designers Notes in the pattern carefully, and all will be revealed.
Sizes Available: varies, from 26” to 29” (66 to 74 cm) deep and 56” to 62” (142 to 157 cm) wingspan
Algo-rhythm Asymmetrical Crescent Shawlette by Laurie Beardsley
What is Being Made
Algo-rhythm is a knitted shawlette designed as an asymmetrical crescent. The finished piece measures approximately 26 to 29 inches (66 to 74 cm) in depth and 56 to 62 inches (142 to 157 cm) in wingspan, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a lightweight wrap. The shawlette's design philosophy draws inspiration from algorithmic thinking, where small variations in input create diverse yet cohesive outputs through a consistent process.
Design Concept and Construction Method
This pattern embodies the designer's approach to knitting as a systematic process, similar to programming logic. The shawlette is constructed from a series of rectangles and triangles that vary in size as the piece grows outward. This modular construction method allows knitters to understand how changing dimensions within the same algorithmic framework produces different visual and structural results, while maintaining the integrity of the overall design.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The primary stitch used in Algo-rhythm is garter stitch, which creates a reversible, textured fabric with excellent drape characteristics. Garter stitch is formed by knitting every row, producing horizontal ridges on both sides of the fabric. This fundamental technique is ideal for shawlette construction because it provides structure while remaining flexible and elegant when blocked.
The asymmetrical crescent shape is achieved through strategic increases and the geometric arrangement of rectangular and triangular sections. This construction method allows knitters to build the shawlette in a logical sequence, with each section's dimensions contributing to the overall crescent silhouette.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Algo-rhythm requires 440 yards (400 meters) of fingering weight yarn, classified as 4-ply weight. Fingering weight yarn is a fine, delicate yarn that produces detailed stitch definition and elegant drape. The pattern recommends selecting fingering weight yarns with excellent drape qualities, particularly silk or bamboo blends, which enhance the shawlette's fluid movement and luxurious appearance when worn.
Knitters will need US 6 (4 mm) knitting needles to work with the fingering weight yarn at the specified gauge. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and blocking supplies to set the finished shawlette's shape and enhance its drape.
Gauge and Sizing Considerations
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 36 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch. However, the designer notes that gauge is not critical for this project. Variations in gauge will affect the total yardage consumed and the final dimensions and drape characteristics of the finished shawlette, allowing knitters flexibility in yarn selection and needle sizing based on their preferred fabric qualities.
Skill Level
Algo-rhythm is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore shaping techniques and geometric construction methods. The pattern's modular approach and reliance on garter stitch make it accessible while offering opportunities to develop understanding of how algorithmic design principles apply to fiber arts.
