What you'll need

Product Description

Aletheia is a circular shawl. It is started from the center and knitted in the round, evenly increasing the stitch count until the outer edge is reached. You are always knitting on the right side of the fabric, until you reach the edge portion of the shawl. The work is begun with double pointed needles and continued with circular needles as the shawl grows bigger. When the body portion is completed, the shawl is finished by knitting a lace edging sideways around the outside of the circular body portion. The edge portion is worked on both sides of the fabric (RS and WS).

The shawl is begun with written instructions for a stockinette stitch beginning, after which the lace portion begins. The lace pattern is charted only and it consists of three different charts. The stitches used are k, p, yo, k2tog, k3tog, skp, sk2p and m1. The swatch uses also p2tog.

Aletheia Laceweight Circular Shawl by Henna Markkanen

What is Being Made

Aletheia is an advanced circular shawl designed by independent designer Henna Markkanen. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 45 inches (114 centimeters) in diameter, making it a substantial accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap. The shawl is constructed as a complete circle, allowing for versatile styling options and elegant drape.

Construction Method and Technique

Aletheia employs a center-out construction technique, a hallmark of advanced circular shawl design. The knitter begins at the center point of the shawl and works outward in the round, with the stitch count increasing evenly as the shawl expands toward its outer edge. This approach ensures balanced growth and a symmetrical finished piece. A distinctive feature of this pattern is that the knitter works exclusively on the right side of the fabric throughout most of the construction, until reaching the final edge portion. This technique simplifies the knitting process by eliminating the need to turn the work and manage wrong-side rows.

Needle Requirements and Gauge

The pattern requires US 1.5/2.5 millimeter needles. Construction begins with double-pointed needles to accommodate the small number of stitches at the center, then transitions to circular needles as the shawl grows larger and stitch counts increase. The recommended gauge is approximately 5.5 inches (14 centimeters) wide by 3.5 inches (9 centimeters) tall on a gauge swatch, providing guidance for achieving proper finished dimensions.

Yarn Specifications

Aletheia is designed for laceweight yarn and requires approximately 1150 yards (1050 meters) of yarn to complete. The pattern specifies Knitlob's Lair Aino, a 100 percent Merino Wool yarn with yardage of 1250 meters (1390 yards) per 100-gram skein. Merino Wool provides excellent elasticity and drape, qualities essential for laceweight shawls that showcase intricate stitch patterns and delicate construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

As an advanced-level pattern, Aletheia incorporates lace stitches characteristic of sophisticated circular shawl design. While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, laceweight circular shawls typically feature yarn overs, decreases, and intricate motifs that create openwork sections and visual interest. The even increases distributed throughout the pattern maintain shaping while allowing lace elements to develop symmetrically from center to edge.

Additional Materials and Finishing

Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, blocking pins for shaping the finished shawl, and one stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats or construction points. Blocking is an essential finishing step for laceweight shawls, allowing the knitter to open up lace stitches and achieve the intended finished dimensions and drape.

Difficulty Level

Designated as an advanced pattern, Aletheia is suited for experienced knitters comfortable with circular construction, laceweight yarn management, and reading complex stitch patterns. The center-out circular construction and sustained right-side-only knitting require attention to stitch increases and pattern consistency throughout the project.
