Product Description
Inspired by my own dastardly feathered yellow-bellies, this sweater is fun, sexy, sweet and delightful to wear next to your skin!
Improvements for any and all who choose to take on this pattern: If I was going to change anything about the sweater, I'd pay more attention to the sleeve caps (to make them fit properly), add just a tad more to the front-sides of the neckline, and lengthen the sweater a couple inches (it's actually the "normal" length for a sweater, but I prefer them a bit longer).

Alatus Knitted Sweater by Teresa Gregorio
What is Being Made
Alatus is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Teresa Gregorio, available as a free downloadable PDF pattern. This garment features a distinctive low-cut, nearly square neckline with three-quarter length sleeves and is constructed to achieve a close-fitting silhouette. The design emphasizes minimal seaming for a refined finish, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to expand their technical skills.
Cable Charting and Design Inspiration
The Alatus pattern was created as a learning project specifically to master cable charting techniques. The sweater showcases cables on both the front and back panels, demonstrating the designer's exploration of this classic knitting technique. This pattern is particularly valuable for intermediate knitters seeking to develop proficiency in reading and working from cable charts.
Knitting Techniques Used
The primary construction technique centers on cable knitting, a fundamental skill that involves crossing groups of stitches over one another to create twisted, rope-like textures. The pattern assumes knitters already possess basic cable knowledge and focuses on the application of cables within a structured garment design. Additional techniques include:
- Gauge manipulation and adjustment for proper fit
- Shaping methods to achieve the close-fitted silhouette
- Minimal seaming construction for streamlined assembly
- Neckline shaping for the distinctive low-cut, square-neck design
Stitches and Stitch Work
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the available pattern excerpt, the construction relies heavily on cable stitches as the primary decorative element. The pattern is designed to work with standard knitting gauge principles, allowing knitters to customize sizing based on their own measurements and yarn choices. The designer notes that understanding gauge manipulation is essential for achieving the intended close fit.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The pattern does not specify particular yarn weight, fiber content, or needle size in the provided excerpt. Instead, the designer emphasizes working from gauge to determine appropriate materials for individual knitters. This approach allows flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the sweater's intended proportions and fit. Knitters should plan to swatch their chosen yarn and needles to establish proper gauge before beginning the main garment.
Sizing and Customization
The pattern is drafted for a person measuring 5'1" in height with bust, waist, and hip measurements of 35, 27, and 36 inches respectively. The designer provides specific numerical guidance for this sizing, though knitters with different measurements can adapt the pattern using gauge adjustments and basic shaping modifications.
Pattern Format and Accessibility
Alatus is offered as a free, downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Teresa Gregorio. The pattern includes written instructions for shaping and cable construction techniques. A cable chart was planned for inclusion in the pattern documentation, providing visual reference for the cable placements on both front and back panels.
