Product Description
These cottony summer socks are worked from the top down in a twisted cable pattern. Because 100% cotton yarn does not have as much elasticity as typical sock yarn, please err on the side of caution when choosing your size and make a larger size than you typically would.

Alameda Twisted Cable Summer Socks
What Is Being Made
The Alameda Twisted Cable Summer Socks are a pair of lightweight, breathable socks designed specifically for warm weather wear. Created by designer Stefanie Goodwin-Ritter, these socks feature a distinctive twisted cable pattern worked in 100% cotton yarn. The pattern is available in three sizes with finished circumferences of 7 inches, 8 inches, and 9 inches unstretched, making them suitable for various foot sizes.
Craft and Construction Method
These socks are knitted using the top-down construction method, which means knitters begin at the cuff and work downward toward the toe. This approach allows for easy fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the socks as you progress. The socks are worked in the round for most of the construction, then transitioned to flat knitting for the heel flap section.
An important consideration for this pattern is the use of 100% cotton yarn, which has significantly less elasticity than traditional wool-based sock yarns. Stefanie Goodwin-Ritter specifically recommends that knitters choose a larger size than they would typically select to account for the reduced stretch and recovery of cotton fiber.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
- Twisted Cable Pattern – The signature design element worked across half of the sock leg using a charted pattern
- Stockinette Stitch – Used for the remaining half of the leg and other sections, providing a smooth, classic fabric
- Knit and Purl Ribbing (K2, P2) – Creates the cuff with elasticity and a traditional sock finish
- Cable Techniques – Requires the use of a cable needle to create the twisted cable pattern shown in the provided charts
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for Knit Picks Simply Cotton Sport weight yarn in 2, 2, or 3 skeins depending on size selected. The photographed sample is shown in the colorway Haze Heather. Sport weight yarn is a lightweight option ideal for summer garments.
Needles: US 2/2.75 mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Double-pointed needles allow for seamless, circular knitting in the round.
Notions and Tools: A cable needle for working the twisted cable pattern, at least one stitch marker for marking the beginning of rounds, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly with cotton yarn where elasticity is limited. Three size options are provided with cast-on counts of 52, 60, or 68 stitches, allowing customization for different foot sizes.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, reflecting the complexity of working twisted cable patterns in the round and managing the heel flap construction. Knitters should be comfortable with cable techniques, reading charts, and transitioning between circular and flat knitting before attempting this project.
