Aila Grace Shawl by Jennifer Lassonde
What Is Being Made
The Aila Grace Shawl is an elegant, top-down triangular shawl designed by Jennifer Lassonde. This elongated shawl measures 60 inches wide by 17 inches deep, making it a versatile accessory that adds personality and classic style to any wardrobe. The design was inspired by the designer's niece, Aila, and captures both fiery character and refined beauty in its construction.
Craft and Project Type
This is a knitting project suitable for beginners. The shawl uses a straightforward top-down construction method, making it an accessible introduction to shawl knitting for those new to the craft. The triangular shape develops naturally from the top-down approach, requiring minimal shaping techniques while delivering a sophisticated finished garment.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Aila Grace Shawl is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit stitch pattern that creates a smooth, classic fabric. The pattern employs a top-down construction method, where knitters begin at the apex of the triangle and increase outward to create the final dimensions. This technique is ideal for beginners because it allows for easy adjustments and provides clear visual progress as the shawl grows.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern requires 400 yards of fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply yarn. The sample shown in the pattern was created using Ball & Skein Sophia Fingering in the colorway Bittersweet. This yarn is composed of 80% Merino wool, 10% Nylon, and 10% Cashmere, providing a blend of warmth, durability, and luxury fiber content.
Knitters will need US 7 (4.5mm) circular needles measuring at least 24 inches in length. The pattern calls for a gauge of 19 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Additional notions include 4 stitch markers, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and blocking pins or wires for finishing.
Finished Dimensions
- Width: 60 inches
- Depth: 17 inches

Skill Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Aila Grace Shawl is an excellent choice for knitters new to shawl construction. The straightforward top-down method and reliance on basic stockinette stitch make this pattern approachable while still producing a polished, wearable accessory.
