Abney Knit Shawl by Neish Design
What Is Being Made
Abney is an oversized, unisex scarf and wrap designed by Neisha Abdulla. This knitted accessory measures 17 inches wide by 92 inches long, making it a versatile piece suitable for draping as either a traditional scarf or a cozy wrap. The design features an Argyle-inspired pattern that draws from Scottish textile traditions commonly seen in sweaters, socks, and scarves.
Design and Pattern Features
The Abney shawl showcases a sophisticated diamond motif created through strategic stitch placement. The pattern presents concave diamond shapes on one side and convex diamond shapes on the reverse, creating visual interest and dimension. This reversible quality adds to the garment's versatility and appeal as a statement accessory piece.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Abney is constructed using the Diamond Stitch Pattern, a technique that creates the characteristic Argyle-inspired geometric design. The pattern is worked over a lightly blocked finished piece, which helps set the stitches and enhance the dimensional quality of the diamond motifs. The use of this stitch pattern combined with the yarn weight creates a fabric with excellent drape suitable for a wrap-style accessory.
Yarn and Materials
This project uses Knit Picks Biggo yarn in the Indigo Heather colorway (color code 26570). The yarn is a chunky-weight blend composed of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Diamond Nylon, providing both softness and durability. The pattern requires 9 skeins, with each skein containing 110 yards and weighing 100 grams. Knitting is worked on US 9 (5.5mm) straight or circular needles, sized to obtain the project gauge.
Gauge and Sizing
The recommended gauge for Abney is 15.25 stitches and 22.5 rows over 4 inches when working the Diamond Stitch Pattern in a lightly blocked state. The pattern notes that gauge differences will affect the finished dimensions and total yarn quantity required, so achieving proper gauge is important for consistent results.
Skill Level
Abney is rated as a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft while still offering the satisfaction of creating a beautiful, finished accessory. The straightforward construction and use of a single stitch pattern throughout make this an ideal project for building fundamental knitting skills.
