Aberdeen Scarf by Jen Lucas
What is Being Made
The Aberdeen Scarf is a lightweight lace scarf designed for knitters seeking an elegant, versatile accessory. This scarf measures 8 inches wide by 76 inches long, making it an ideal length for wrapping, draping, or styling. The design is particularly well-suited for using up fingering weight and sock yarn from your stash, offering an excellent project for crafters with leftover yarn in their collection.
Knitting Techniques
The Aberdeen Scarf is knit on the bias, a technique that creates diagonal lines across the fabric and adds visual interest to the finished piece. Bias knitting also allows the scarf to drape beautifully and creates natural stretch in the fabric. The pattern features lace construction throughout, which creates an open, airy fabric perfect for a scarf that works across multiple seasons. With only an eight-row repeat, the lace pattern is easy to memorize, allowing experienced knitters to work without constantly consulting the pattern instructions.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The Aberdeen Scarf uses fundamental knitting stitches combined in a lace pattern repeat. Core stitches include:
- Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch
- Purl (p) – the basic purl stitch
- Knit two stitches together (k2tog) – a decrease that reduces stitch count and creates shaping within the lace pattern
- Yarn overs – implied in the lace construction to create the open, decorative holes characteristic of lace knitting
The pattern is presented in both written and chart form, giving knitters flexibility in how they prefer to follow instructions. The eight-row repeat makes this an intermediate-level project that is approachable for knitters with some experience who are ready to work lace patterns.
Customization Options
While the Aberdeen Scarf is written for one standard size, the pattern allows for customization. Knitters can adjust the width by casting on any multiple of nine stitches, making it possible to create narrower or wider versions depending on personal preference. This flexibility means the scarf can be tailored to individual style and yarn availability.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Aberdeen Scarf requires approximately 450 yards of fingering weight yarn. The sample scarf shown in the pattern was knit using Anzula Cloud, a premium yarn blend containing 80% superwash merino wool, 10% cashmere, and 10% nylon, which provides softness, durability, and easy care. One skein of Anzula Cloud (575 yards per 4-ounce skein) provides more than enough yardage for this project.
Knitters should note that gauge is not critical for this pattern; however, different gauges will affect both the yardage required and the final dimensions of the scarf. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches when worked in the lace pattern.
Tools Required
Knitters will need US Size 4 (3.5mm) knitting needles or the size required to obtain proper gauge with their chosen yarn. A tapestry needle is also recommended for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Yarn Weight Specifications
The Aberdeen Scarf is designed for 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, with fingering weight yarn being the primary recommendation. These lighter yarn weights create the delicate lace fabric characteristic of this design and allow the scarf to be lightweight and breathable.
