The garter section makes this project a fast knit, and the complicated lace shows itself better next to a relaxed background.

Sensualidad is not for the faint hearted: is very lacy and breath taking.

Complementario shawl plays with complement colors and has unique shape.

Abanico Shawl by Zsuzsa Kiss

What is Being Made

The Abanico is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Zsuzsa Kiss. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a beautiful fan-shaped shawl worked from the top down using circular needles. The finished shawl features multiple size options as indicated on the schematic, making it adaptable to different preferences and yarn quantities.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is executed entirely through knitting, the primary craft method. The shawl is constructed using circular needles, which allow for seamless working in the round and provide flexibility for managing the increasing stitch count as the shawl expands outward from the top. The fan-like construction typical of an abanico design requires careful attention to pattern repeats and strategic increases.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

The Abanico shawl employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Garter stitch – the base pattern used to establish gauge, created by knitting every row
  • Yarn overs (yo) – used to create decorative lace elements and intentional increases that form the shawl's openwork pattern
  • Knit stitches (k) – the foundational stitch throughout the project
  • Purl stitches (p) – incorporated for textural variation and pattern definition
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Slip-slip-knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease that provides balanced decreases opposite k2tog
  • Slip 1, knit 2 together, pass over (sl1, k2tog, psso) – a double decrease creating a centered reduction
  • Purl 3 together (p3tog) – a decrease worked on the purl side
  • Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase method that adds stitches while maintaining fabric integrity

Pattern Structure and Complexity

The pattern utilizes 26 stitch markers to track the multiple pattern repeats throughout the shawl construction. This intermediate difficulty rating reflects the need to manage several concurrent pattern sections and maintain accurate stitch counts as the shawl grows. The repeating fan motifs require consistent execution of the stitch sequences to achieve the intended visual design.

Yarn and Materials

The Abanico shawl is designed to work with sport to light fingering weight yarn with a high wool content. The recommended yarn for this pattern is Soft Rainbow Yarns High Twist, a premium option that provides 400 meters (437 yards) per 100 grams. This yarn composition of 80% merino and 20% nylon offers both softness and durability, with the nylon content adding elasticity and longevity to the finished shawl.

The project requires approximately 800 meters (880 yards) of yarn total, though yardage requirements will vary depending on which finished size option is selected and the specific gauge achieved with your chosen yarn.

Needles and Notions

Construction requires 4 mm (US size 6) circular needles measuring 100 centimeters (40 inches) long. The longer circular needle length accommodates the expanding stitch count as the fan-shaped shawl grows outward. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and 26 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats throughout the knitting process.

Gauge Information

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches by 30 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) worked in garter stitch. However, the pattern notes that achieving exact gauge is not essential for this particular project. Variations in gauge will affect both the final yardage required and the overall dimensions of the completed shawl, so knitters should be prepared for size and yardage adjustments if working with different yarn weights or gauges than specified.

Yarn Weight Options

The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights within the sport and 3-ply to 4-ply range, providing flexibility for yarn substitution. Working with different yarn weights or gauges will impact both the yardage needed and the final
