Product Description
A little stocking stitch cardigan in 8 ply / DK yarn, with an unusual effect to the raglan shaping.
This pattern is a bit different – the "bit of magic" involves a crochet hook but requires no knowledge of crochet!
The body is worked flat, in one piece, top down. The sleeves are picked up and knit in the round, so there are no seams at all.
The number of buttons is optional and so is the sleeve length.
Yarns can be one colour or many in one yarn.
There are four sizes to fit newborns to toddlers. This is a unisex design.
A Little Bit of Magic Cardigan by Rian Anderson
Project Overview
A Little Bit of Magic is a top-down knitted cardigan designed for babies and toddlers, available in four sizes ranging from newborn to 2 years old. This downloadable PDF pattern by independent designer Rian Anderson offers a charming garment with distinctive raglan shaping and thoughtful construction details that make it both interesting to knit and practical for little ones.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a classic baby cardigan with a modern twist. The garment is designed to fit chest sizes from 40 cm (16 inches) for newborns up to 55 cm (22 inches) for toddlers aged 1-2 years. The cardigan features optional eyelets for decorative detail and offers flexibility in construction with a choice of sleeve length—either long sleeves or short sleeves—allowing knitters to adapt the design to seasonal needs. Button closures complete the front opening.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level cardigan is worked using a top-down construction method, which means knitting begins at the neckline and progresses downward toward the hem. This approach eliminates the need for seaming, as the entire garment is knitted in one continuous piece. The pattern features an unusual effect to the raglan shaping, distinguishing it from standard raglan cardigans and adding visual interest to the finished piece. The inclusion of optional eyelets provides opportunities for decorative embellishment and allows for creative personalization of the design.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout this cardigan is stocking stitch (also known as stockinette stitch), which creates the classic smooth, V-patterned fabric characteristic of many fitted knitwear pieces. This fundamental knit stitch is worked by alternating knit rows and purl rows, producing a refined appearance suitable for baby garments. The optional eyelets are created using yarn overs and decreases, adding textural variation to the design.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern calls for 8 ply / DK (double knitting) weight yarn, a versatile medium-weight yarn that works well for garments requiring good stitch definition and drape. Yarn requirements vary by size and sleeve length:
- Long sleeves: 150-370 metres (165-405 yards) depending on size
- Short sleeves: 125-260 metres (135-285 yards) depending on size
A 4 mm (US 6) circular needle is required, used as a pair for working the garment. The pattern accommodates the natural variation in DK yarns, providing estimated yardage figures rounded up to ensure adequate yarn for completion.
Size Range and Measurements
The pattern includes four distinct sizes with specific measurements:
- Newborn to 3 months: 40 cm (16 inches) chest, 23 cm (9 inches) length, 14 cm (5.5 inches) sleeve
- 3 to 6 months: 45 cm (18 inches) chest, 26 cm (10 inches) length, 17 cm (6.5 inches) sleeve
- 6 to 12 months: 50 cm (20 inches) chest, 29 cm (11.5 inches) length, 20 cm (8 inches) sleeve
- 1 to 2 years: 55 cm (22 inches) chest, 32 cm (12.5 inches) length, 24 cm (9.5 inches) sleeve
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, A Little Bit of Magic is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle top-down construction and raglan shaping. The stocking stitch base makes it accessible, while the distinctive raglan technique and seamless construction provide engaging challenges for developing knitters.
