Product Description

This is a simple triangular shawl but the stitch pattern creates a lovely open body and the lacy edge, in a contrast colour, gives the piece a sophisticated look.

The original design was made using Vinnis Colours Serina, a 100% bamboo yarn. 7 balls of silver were used for the shawl body and 3 balls of light aqua for the edge.

Gauge is not of great importance for this shawl but you should aim for a good drape, which is why a 4.5mm hook was used for this design. Serina is usually worked with a 3mm - 3.5mm hook but the use of the larger hook creates a slightly loser and drapier fabric. Yardage: 1094-1214 yards (1000-1110m)

A Day at the Beach Shawl

What is Being Made

A Day at the Beach shawl is a crocheted triangular wrap designed by Stephanie Davies. This beginner-friendly shawl pattern offers a lightweight, elegant accessory perfect for beach outings or casual layering. The design features an open, airy construction that showcases the delicate nature of the yarn and stitch work.

Craft and Primary Technique

This pattern is created using crochet as the primary craft method. The shawl is worked from a central starting point using the magic ring technique, which creates a closed loop without a visible hole at the center. This foundational method allows crafters to begin the shawl seamlessly and expand outward in rows, building the triangular shape progressively.

Crochet Stitches Used

The A Day at the Beach shawl incorporates several fundamental crochet stitches to create its textured and open design:

  • Treble crochet (tr) – Used extensively throughout the pattern to create height and drape in the fabric
  • Double crochet (dc) – Employed in chain spaces to add structure and definition to the stitch pattern
  • Chain stitches (ch) – Used to create the open spaces and lacy sections characteristic of shawl designs, with specific chain-2 (ch 2) and chain-4 (ch 4) sequences
  • Slip stitch – Applied to lock and secure loops during the magic ring setup

Pattern Structure and Techniques

The shawl is constructed using a repeating row-based pattern that expands as you progress. Key techniques include working into chain spaces (ch-sp), increasing stitches strategically to maintain the triangular shape, and creating decorative openings through chain sequences. The pattern uses bracketed repeat instructions (indicated by [rep to end]), allowing crafters to work consistent stitch sequences across multiple rows. The magic ring starting method is a modern crochet technique that eliminates the traditional center hole, creating a polished, professional appearance at the shawl's point.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The A Day at the Beach shawl is designed to be worked with Vinnis Colours Serina yarn, a 100% bamboo fiber yarn. This yarn is classified as 3-ply weight, providing a lightweight, breathable quality ideal for beach wear and warm-weather accessories. The Serina yarn is available in the Silver colorway for this pattern, offering a neutral, versatile shade. With a yardage of 111 meters per 50-gram skein, the yarn creates a delicate drape and beautiful stitch definition that showcases the open lacework of the shawl design.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for crocheters new to shawl construction. While it incorporates multiple stitch types and requires understanding of pattern repeats, the straightforward row-by-row structure and use of fundamental crochet stitches make it accessible to those with basic crochet experience.

Format

The A Day at the Beach shawl pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access to the complete instructions and any accompanying charts or diagrams for reference during your crochet project.
