Product Description

A Cog in the Machine was designed as part of a collaboration with Marigoldjen, Sparklepunk, and myself. At Zombie Knitpocalypse 2014 (an anual knitting retreat), the three of us were in a larger group that went to a coffee shop one afternoon. Sparklepunk and I started showing off some of our design work and Marigoldjen said, “We could do a collaboration - I could offer yarn support.” So the three of us got to talking and a Steampunk collaboration was born.

Marigoldjen dyed up a beautiful colorway, “Copper Patina”. Sparklepunk designed a gorgeous pair of socks, “Mechanical Bell”.

A Cog in the Machine Shawl by Heather Laws

Project Overview

A Cog in the Machine is an intermediate-level knitted shawl design created by independent designer Heather Laws. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a sophisticated construction combining colorwork and textural stitch techniques to create a finished piece with visual depth and mechanical-inspired detailing.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a knitted shawl featuring a two-color design with contrasting yarn weights and fiber compositions. The shawl incorporates cable work and garter stitch construction, creating a textile with both structural interest and visual complexity. The design name references industrial imagery, suggesting the finished piece includes geometric or mechanical-inspired motifs achieved through strategic stitch placement and color changes.

Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to achieve its finished design:

  • Cable work: The pattern includes cable stitches (c8f notation indicates an 8-stitch cable crossed to the front), requiring the use of a cable needle to create twisted, rope-like texture
  • Right twist stitches (rt): A technique that skips stitches and knits them out of order to create diagonal lines and visual movement within the fabric
  • Garter stitch: The primary stitch base, created by knitting every row, which produces horizontal ridges and provides a sturdy, textured foundation
  • Two-color knitting: The pattern alternates between main color (MC) and contrast color (CC) to create visual definition and pattern contrast
  • Decreases: Techniques including k2tog (knit two together) and pass slipped stitch over (psso) are used for shaping
  • Stitch markers: Twelve stitch markers help track pattern repeats and construction sections throughout the knitting process

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including knit (K), purl (p), slip stitch (sl), knit two together (k2tog), cable stitches (c8f), right twists (rt), and pass slipped stitch over (psso). These stitches combine to create the mechanical texture and visual interest characteristic of the design.

Yarn and Materials

Main Color Yarn: Marigold Jen Sock Weight Yarn in "Copper Patina" (75% merino wool, 25% nylon; 463 yards per 100 grams). Approximately 450 yards of main color yarn is required for completion.

Contrast Color Yarn: Marigold Jen Sock Weight Yarn in "Copper Patina" (75% merino wool, 20% nylon, 5% stellina; 438 yards per 100 grams). Approximately 215 yards of contrast color yarn is needed.

Needles: US Size 5 (3.75mm) needles are used throughout the pattern.

Additional Notions: The pattern requires twelve stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, a cable needle for cable work (optional, though recommended for intermediate knitters), a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, and scissors for cutting yarn.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 21 garter ridges over 4 inches (10 centimeters). Achieving proper gauge is essential for the shawl to reach its intended finished size and drape.

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

This pattern uses 4-ply sock weight yarn, a lightweight but durable yarn category. The merino wool content provides softness and elasticity, while the nylon adds durability and prevents pilling. The stellina (sparkly fiber) in the contrast color yarn adds subtle shimmer and visual interest to the finished piece. The combination of fiber types creates a shawl suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.
