A B C Egg Cosy by Karin Burkart
What is Being Made
The A B C Egg Cosy is a beginner-friendly knitted egg warmer designed by Karin Burkart. This small, decorative accessory is perfect for keeping boiled eggs warm at the breakfast table or as a quick handmade gift. The finished egg cosy measures approximately 9 cm in length and 7.5 cm in width, making it an ideal size for standard eggs.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The egg cosy is constructed using circular knitting on double-pointed needles, which creates a seamless tubular fabric. The main body is worked in stockinette stitch (alternating knit and purl rounds) to establish the base structure. The pattern incorporates decreasing techniques in the final rounds to shape the top of the cosy, using knit-two-together decreases to gradually reduce the stitch count. Additionally, the design features Swiss Darning, also known as duplicate stitch, which is an embroidery technique worked after the knitting is complete. This method allows for the creation of the A B C pattern detail using a contrasting yarn color without requiring complex colorwork during the actual knitting process.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (kn): The primary stitch forming the majority of the fabric
- Purl stitch (pr): Used in alternating rounds to create texture and definition
- Knit two together (knit 2 tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the top of the egg cosy
- Swiss Darning/Duplicate stitch: An embroidery stitch applied after knitting to add the letter pattern detail
Materials Required
This project requires minimal materials, making it economical and portable. The pattern calls for 4 double-pointed knitting needles in 3mm size to accommodate the circular knitting method across three needles. The yarn is cotton DK weight in two colors: approximately 10 grams of Color A (the main body color) and approximately 4 grams of Color B (for the Swiss Darning detail). Additional tools include a darning needle for finishing and closing the final stitches, scissors for trimming yarn ends, and a fork, which is traditionally used to create a neat finish when binding off the remaining stitches. The gauge is 22 stitches by 30 rows over 10 centimeters in stockinette stitch.
Pattern Structure
The egg cosy is worked in the round from the bottom up, beginning with a cast-on of 36 stitches distributed equally across three double-pointed needles. The pattern progresses through 31 rounds total. The initial rounds establish texture through alternating knit and purl rounds. The middle section maintains 36 stitches in stockinette stitch for the majority of the body. The final rounds systematically decrease stitches using knit-two-together reductions to close the top of the cosy, reducing from 36 stitches to 24, then to 12, and finally to 6 stitches, which are secured with a darning needle. Once the knitted structure is complete, the Swiss Darning technique is applied to add the ABC letter pattern using the contrasting yarn color.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as beginner level, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft. The techniques involved—basic knit and purl stitches, simple decreases, and circular knitting on double-pointed needles—are foundational skills. The small finished size means the project is quick to complete, typically suitable for a last-minute gift or decoration. Swiss Darning, while requiring some precision, is an embroidery technique that can be learned and practiced on this small project without significant complexity.
