Product Description
Valley Yarns Cinnamon is a lace and
chevron triangle shawl that would make a lovely gift heading into fall and winter. This perfect shoulder warmer takes only three hanks of Valley Yarns’ Hatfield. Cinnamon is knit back and forth in rows, up and out from the
90-degree corner, in a combination of leaf lace and chevron stitch patterns
that create both vertical and horizontal movements across the knitted
fabric. You'll fall in love with
Hatfield at a single touch. This 100% baby alpaca yarn is lace-weight and comes
in fabulous heathered shades. The chevron and leaf lace patterns are charted
and written out.

948 Cinnamon Shawl Knitting Pattern
Project Overview
The 948 Cinnamon is a lace and chevron triangle shawl designed by Julie Turjoman for intermediate knitters. Inspired by the rich color of fall leaves, this shoulder warmer combines delicate lace work with chevron stitch patterning to create an elegant accessory perfect for cold weather. The finished shawl measures approximately 60 inches in length and 38 inches in depth when blocked, making it a generous wrap suitable for layering over shoulders and arms.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn: The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Valley Yarns Hatfield, a luxurious lace-weight yarn composed of 100% baby alpaca. Each skein contains 50 grams and yields 437 yards, providing ample yardage for the complete shawl. The recommended colorway is Red Clay, which evokes autumn tones.
Needles and Notions: Knitters will need a size 6 (4 mm) circular needle measuring 32 to 40 inches in length, or the size required to achieve proper gauge. Additional materials include 26 stitch markers—with 4 markers in a contrasting color to help distinguish pattern repeats—and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches when working the chevron stitch pattern on blocked fabric. Achieving this gauge is essential for the shawl to reach its intended finished dimensions. The design is offered in one size (O/S), accommodating most wearers.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The 948 Cinnamon employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to achieve its sophisticated appearance:
- Bottom-Up Construction: The shawl is worked from the bottom edge upward, allowing knitters to try on the garment as it grows and adjust the final length if desired.
- Seamless, Flat Knitting: The pattern is worked flat on circular needles without seaming, creating a smooth, unified fabric. Circular needles are used for their length and ease of managing a large number of stitches, rather than for working in the round.
- Lace Patterning: The design incorporates a 12-stitch leaf lace pattern repeat that creates openwork sections characteristic of lace knitting. This technique involves yarn overs and strategic decreases to form decorative holes and motifs.
- Chevron Stitch Integration: Chevron stitching is combined with the lace pattern to produce a dynamic V-shaped stitch pattern that adds visual interest and helps define the shawl's triangular silhouette.
- Stitch Marker Management: The pattern uses multiple stitch markers to track pattern repeats, with four markers in a unique color serving as key reference points. This organizational approach helps intermediate knitters maintain pattern accuracy across the width of the shawl.
Pattern Structure
The pattern begins with a cast-on edge and includes a set-up section that establishes the foundation for the lace and chevron motifs. Knitters will work the 12-stitch leaf lace pattern a total of 9 times across the width, with stitch markers placed between each repeat to maintain clarity. The right-side rows are marked clearly, and the pattern uses standard abbreviations including knit (K), slip marker (sl m), knit into front and back for increases (Kfb), and knit two together for decreases (K2tog).
Skill Level and Considerations
Rated as an intermediate project, the 948 Cinnamon is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace work and more complex stitch patterns. The combination of lace and chevron techniques requires attention to detail and familiarity with yarn overs, decreases, and pattern reading. The use of stitch markers throughout helps manage the complexity, making the pattern accessible to those expanding their knitting repertoire.
