818 Stone Rose Pullover – Stranded Colorwork Yoke Knitting Pattern by Kirsten Hipsky

The 818 Stone Rose Pullover, designed by Kirsten Hipsky, is a fitted women's seamless pullover featuring a boldly patterned circular yoke worked in stranded colorwork. Published as a downloadable PDF by Valley Yarns, this advanced-level knitting pattern produces a polished, contemporary sweater with a striking two-color floral motif at the yoke and a clean, classic silhouette through the body and sleeves.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a women's fitted pullover jumper with a seamless circular yoke construction. The colorwork design is concentrated at the rounded yoke, making it a dramatic focal point against the solid-color body and sleeves. The finished garment is available in four chest circumference ranges: 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, and 56 inches, with the sample shown in size 36 inches. The design is intended for knitters with advanced skills who are comfortable with stranded colorwork, working in the round, and seamless construction techniques.

Construction Techniques

  • Bottom-up construction: The body and sleeves are each begun at the lower edges and worked upward, then joined together to form the seamless yoke. This approach gives knitters excellent control over length adjustments before committing to the yoke shaping.
  • Seamless, worked in the round: The entire pullover is knitted in the round using circular and double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and producing a smooth, professional finish on the inside and outside of the garment.
  • Stranded colorwork: The circular yoke features bold two-color stranded knitting, in which both yarn colors are carried across each round and the unused color is floated or woven in at the back. This technique creates the characteristic dense, warm fabric associated with traditional Fair Isle and Nordic-style yoke sweaters.
  • Provisional cast on: The sleeves are preferably begun with a provisional cast on, which allows the hem to be finished with a turned hem rather than a traditional ribbed cuff. This creates a refined, tailored edge at the sleeve openings.
  • Turned hem: Both the body and sleeves feature a turned hem worked in stockinette stitch on smaller needles, giving the lower edges a neat, folded finish rather than a ribbed border.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch throughout the body, sleeves, and hem sections. Worked in the round, stockinette produces a smooth knit fabric on the right side.
  • Stranded colorwork pattern: The yoke features a multi-round repeating colorwork motif worked in two colors, requiring knitters to read a colorwork chart and manage two active yarns simultaneously across each round.
  • Purl round: A single purl round is used as a turning ridge at the hem, creating a crisp fold line for the turned hem finish at the sleeve and body edges.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern is written specifically for Valley Yarns Superwash DK hand-dyed by Manos, a luxurious single-ply yarn made from 100% Extrafine Merino Superwash wool, sold in 100g/274-yard skeins. The superwash treatment makes the finished garment machine-washable, while the extrafine merino fiber delivers exceptional softness and stitch definition ideal for showcasing colorwork detail.

Two colorways are used in the design:

  • Color A – Deep Rose: The primary color, used for the body, sleeves, and background of the yoke. Quantities range from 5 skeins (sizes 32–36") up to 10 skeins (size 56").
  • Color B – Stone: The contrast color, used for the colorwork motif and the turned hem at the sleeve cuffs. Quantities range from 1 skein (sizes 32–44") to 2 skeins (sizes 48–56").

Needles and Gauge

  • Primary needles: US size 4 (3.50mm) double-pointed needles and circular needles in a range of lengths
