8-bit Fair Isle Hat by Nuria Pastor

What Is Being Made

The 8-bit Fair Isle Hat is a bonnet-style knitted hat inspired by 8-bit video game aesthetics. Designed by Nuria Pastor, this project was created to fulfill a practical need for a wind-proof hat suitable for cycling while incorporating playful pixel-art styling. The hat is available in three sizes: small (to fit 50 cm / 19.5" child head), medium (55 cm / 22" adult head), and large (60 cm / 23.5" adult head).

Knitting Techniques

This advanced-level knitting project employs Fair Isle colorwork, a traditional technique that involves knitting with multiple colors in the same row to create intricate patterned designs. The Fair Isle method used in this hat incorporates 8-bit pixel-inspired motifs, requiring the knitter to carry yarn colors across the back of the work while switching between colors to build the video game-themed pattern on the fabric surface. The bonnet construction method creates a fitted, structured hat shape that provides coverage and wind protection.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with colorwork techniques:

  • Knit (k) – the primary stitch forming the fabric base
  • Purl (p) – used for textural variation and shaping
  • Knit 2 stitches together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch essential for shaping the hat crown and creating the bonnet silhouette
  • Slip stitch (sl) – used for joining rounds and finishing edges
  • Place marker (pm) – used to track decreases and mark the end of rounds during circular knitting

The construction progresses in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, allowing the knitter to work continuously without seaming.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The sample shown in the pattern was knitted with Létt-Lopi, a 100% wool yarn with a yardage of 100 meters (109 yards) per 50-gram ball. Three coordinating colorway options are specified:

  • Main Color (MC) – #9418 stone blue heather (1 ball, approximately 75 m / 82 y)
  • Contrasting Color 1 (CC1) – #9428 rose heather (1 ball, approximately 40 m / 44 y)
  • Contrasting Color 2 (CC2) – #9426 golden header (1 ball, approximately 40 m / 44 y)

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires two needle sizes to create proper gauge and structure:

  • 5 mm (US 8) needles – used for the main body of the hat
  • 4 mm (US 6) needles – available in both straight and circular options, plus a set of double-pointed needles (dpn) for working the crown decreases

Essential notions include stitch markers to track decreases throughout the pattern and mark the end of rounds during circular knitting, helping maintain accuracy in the Fair Isle colorwork and shaping sequences.

Skill Level

This project is classified as advanced difficulty, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable with Fair Isle colorwork, managing multiple colors, and executing decreases for garment shaping. The combination of colorwork patterning and fitted bonnet construction requires strong foundational knitting skills and attention to pattern detail.
