Product Description
Now available as an individual pattern OR as part of the "With A Splash Of" collection.
7up is a versatile little hat that has some fun with diagonals, knit in soft worsted wt yarn (I used the cashmere, but primo would work just fine!). It can be worn slouchy and back on the head like a beret, or folded up and straight up like a beanie.
I loved the simplicity of the diagonals playing off of each other, and the way the first direction created a "brim" while the second makes more of a hat "body".
This one is a very easy knit, and fun to wear :)
Color: Early Light, sample knit in the cashmere.
Note: in the photos, my sample was knit in the larger size and Melissa has a small head, so, fyi - the hat is a little extra slouchy on her.
Sample is knit in Plucky Aran Cashmere, Color: Early Light. Suggested substitute yarns are shown below.
7Up Knit Hat by BabyCocktails
What is Being Made
7Up is a slouchy knit hat designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a relaxed, comfortable hat suitable for a 19" or 21" head circumference. The finished hat measures 18" or 20" around with a 10" depth, offering a distinctly slouchy silhouette that can be customized for a less relaxed fit if desired.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for either 2 skeins of Plucky Knitter Cashmere 8 ply or 1 skein of Plucky Knitter Primo Worsted, requiring 150–175 yards total. The sample shown features the colorway Early Light. Both yarn options fall within the aran and worsted weight range, providing suitable drape and structure for this hat style.
Needles and Notions
Knitters will need US#6 (4mm) and US#7 (4.5mm) circular needles in 16" length, along with matching double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the crown. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends and a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
7Up employs intermediate-level knitting techniques centered around stockinette stitch as the foundation fabric. The hat features diagonal stitch patterns that create visual interest and structure. The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles, transitioning to DPNs as stitches decrease toward the crown.
The diagonal elements are worked in two sets, with the second set of diagonals beginning directly above where the first set concludes. This construction method allows for customization—knitters can adjust the hat's slouch by stopping the diagonal sections earlier or later, or by choosing the smaller size option for a less relaxed fit.
Pattern Customization Options
- Width can be altered in multiples of 9 stitches
- Length is adjustable by stopping diagonal sections at preferred points
- Slouch level can be reduced by choosing the smaller size or shortening the diagonal sections
Gauge and Construction Details
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 5 stitches and 7 rows per 1 inch on US#7 needles, measured over blocked stockinette stitch. Accurate gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements and hat fit. The two-size options (18" and 20" circumference) accommodate different head sizes while maintaining the characteristic slouchy aesthetic that defines this design.
