Product Description
These socks are knit cuff-down to the toe and feature the traditional heel flap, a Dutch (square) heel turn and gusset construction method. The wide ribbing continues down the heel flap. Although the finished sock will appear to be very skinny, this is simply the effect of the ribbing and your sock will stretch to fit many different shapes of legs and feet!
5x1 Ribbed Socks by Terry Morris
What is Being Made
These are cuff-down socks designed for Women's Medium and Women's Large/Men's Medium sizes. The 5x1 ribbed socks feature a striking vertical ribbed pattern that creates a visually narrow appearance while maintaining excellent stretch and fit across various leg and foot shapes. The socks are constructed using traditional sock architecture with a heel flap, Dutch (square) heel turn, and gusset construction method.
Construction Method and Techniques
The socks are knit from the cuff down to the toe, employing time-tested sock construction techniques. The wide ribbing pattern continues down the heel flap, creating a cohesive design element throughout the sock. A traditional heel flap is worked first, followed by a Dutch (square) heel turn and gusset shaping, which provides structure and durability in the heel area where socks experience the most wear.
The pattern uses a non-standard stitch distribution for the heel and instep. Rather than the typical 50/50 split, the heel contains 29 (35) stitches while the instep contains 31 (37) stitches. This intentional division ensures that the instep patterning features a purl stitch at both the beginning and end, creating visual balance and centering the patterning on the heel flap.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch used for gauge measurement and sock construction
- Ribbing – The 5x1 rib pattern (five knit stitches alternating with one purl stitch) creates the distinctive vertical texture and stretch
- Purl Stitches – Used strategically in the instep patterning for visual definition and balance
Materials and Specifications
The socks require 360 yards (400 yards) of sock or fingering weight yarn, depending on the size being knitted. A set of US Size 1 (2.25mm) double point needles or the appropriate size to obtain gauge is needed for construction. The recommended gauge is 8.5 stitches equals 1 inch over stockinette stitch, which ensures proper fit and the intended appearance of the finished socks.
Design Notes
Although the finished socks appear very skinny due to the visual effect of the 5x1 ribbing, the socks are designed to stretch and accommodate many different leg and foot shapes. This makes them versatile for various wearers despite their narrow appearance. The pattern is suitable for beginner level knitters, making it an accessible project for those new to sock knitting while still incorporating traditional sock construction methods.
