583 Snowdrop Baby Blanket – Knitting Pattern for Babies in Valley Yarns Longmeadow
The 583 Snowdrop Baby Blanket is a beautifully delicate knitted baby blanket designed by Kirsten Hipsky and published as a downloadable PDF pattern. Featuring a repeating motif of eyelets and textured knot stitches, this blanket is described as an heirloom-quality piece that is equally practical — easy to knit, easy to wash, and wonderfully soft for a baby. It is worked in Valley Yarns Longmeadow, a DK-weight yarn blended from 60% Cotton and 40% Microfiber, which gives the finished blanket a gentle drape and machine-washable convenience ideal for baby items.
What Is Being Made
The finished project is a square baby blanket available in three sizes: 29, 32, or 35 inches square. The pattern was photographed in the medium (32-inch) size. Because the blanket is constructed from corner to corner, knitters can easily adjust the finished dimensions by working more or fewer increase rows, making it a flexible and customizable project.
Construction Technique
The blanket is worked flat (back and forth in rows) and is seamless, meaning no seaming is required at any point. The corner-to-corner construction method begins with just 2 cast-on stitches and increases outward to the full width of the blanket, then mirrors that shaping with a decreasing section back down to a final few stitches. This approach creates a diagonal fabric structure and makes sizing adjustments intuitive — simply increase for longer or decrease earlier for a smaller blanket.
Techniques Used
- Lace knitting — the snowdrop motif is built from a repeating 8-row lace pattern using yarn overs and paired decreases to form delicate eyelets across the fabric
- Corner-to-corner shaping — stitches are increased on every right-side row during the first half and decreased on every right-side row during the second half
- Worked flat — all rows are worked back and forth on straight or circular needles, with right-side and wrong-side rows clearly distinguished
- Seamless construction — the blanket is completed as a single piece with no finishing seams required
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) and purl (p) — the foundational stitches forming the fabric base and garter-stitch border
- Yarn over (yo) — creates the decorative eyelets central to the lace snowdrop motif
- K2tog (knit two together) — a right-leaning decrease used throughout the lace pattern and shaping rows
- SSK (slip, slip, knit) — a left-leaning decrease that pairs with k2tog to create the symmetrical lace design
- Sl1-k2tog-psso — a centered double decrease (slip 1 stitch, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over) used at key points in the lace repeat to form the pointed snowdrop tips
- Kfb (knit in the front and back) — used during the set-up and increase section to add stitches at the corners
- Knot stitch — a special textured stitch created by purling 3 stitches together while leaving them on the needle, working a yarn over, then purling the same 3 stitches together again; this produces the small bobble-like spots of texture that give the snowdrop pattern its dimensional character
