Product Description

Ningyo is ispired by the Japanese equvivalent of mermaids. The Ningyo had bodies like a fish and faces like monkeys or humans, but they were not as pretty as the European mermaids. They were described as ugly-pretty with pleasant voices. If you ate the meat from a Ningyo you would have longevity, but at the same time you would be prone to difficulties and accidents. One of the most known legends tell the story of Yao Bikuni, who as a child was gifted meat from a Ningyo from her father. He didn’t consider the problems this might cause for her, because he got drunk on a party were the meat was served. Yao Bikuni survived several husbands and ended her life as a buddhist priestess, 800 yars of age.

This yarn in this top is a mix of wool and silk. It is knitted in the round, bottom up, and is fitted at the waist. It has a narrow front and razer back. The pattern is a traditional lace pattern, called fish tail.

人魚 Ningyo Top

What is Being Made

The 人魚 Ningyo top is a knitted garment inspired by Japanese folklore and the mythical creatures known as Ningyo. Unlike European mermaids depicted as beautiful beings, Ningyo were described as "ugly-pretty" creatures with fish-like bodies and faces resembling monkeys or humans. This top captures the essence of these legendary figures through its design aesthetic. The garment is a customizable knitted top that can be adjusted for length and width to suit individual measurements and preferences.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several techniques to achieve its design. The pattern includes decreasing techniques to shape the waist of the garment, creating a fitted silhouette. The construction allows for pattern repeats on the body section, which can be added or subtracted to customize the overall length of the top. The designer provides guidance on adapting the garment during the knitting process, making this project suitable for knitters with some experience who understand how to modify pattern repeats and manage shaping.

Stitches and Pattern Elements

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the project utilizes lace-weight yarn, which typically involves delicate, openwork stitches that create an airy, elegant fabric. The pattern is constructed in sections, with the body featuring repeatable pattern rows that can be extended or shortened before the waist decreasing begins.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The 人魚 Ningyo top is designed to be knitted with lace-weight yarn. The pattern notes that you will need an additional amount of yarn equivalent to the original specification if you choose to adapt the pattern length. Specific needle sizes are not mentioned in the provided excerpt, though lace-weight projects typically use smaller needles to accommodate the delicate yarn weight and create the intended fabric density.

Customization and Sizing

  • Length Adaptation: The top can be knitted as long as desired by adding or subtracting pattern repeats on the body before decreasing for the waist. The designer recommends knitting the top slightly shorter for those under 170 cm in height and slightly longer for those taller than 170 cm.
  • Width Adaptation: The pattern includes guidance for adapting the width of the garment to achieve a proper fit.

Design Inspiration

The 人魚 Ningyo top draws from Japanese mythology and folklore, specifically the legend of Yao Bikuni and the mystical Ningyo creatures. According to legend, consuming Ningyo flesh was believed to grant longevity, though it came with the risk of difficulties and accidents. This cultural reference adds depth and storytelling to the garment design.
