Product Description
This is a great project if you love to drink out of glass but hate dealing with all the sweating. I have used these kinds of insulators for 2 years. They work great for keeping water colder longer and reduce watery messes. You can reduce the size to a pint if you felt the project. I used the 3/8" gauge x loom but I also have written for regular 60 peg loom version in the same gauge. There is a video tutorial for the x loom version but written for the regular round 60 peg 3/8" loom version. This is also a great project for some scrap worsted yarn. You will need 3 to 4 buttons and if you are doing the round loom version you will need a thin elastic to put through the cast on.
32oz Mason Jar Insulator Fisherman Seed Rib by Scarlett Royale
What is Being Made
This project creates a functional insulator designed to fit a 32-ounce Mason jar. The insulator provides thermal protection and grip for handling hot beverages or preserving cold temperatures. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for crafters looking to make practical, handmade kitchen accessories using loom knitting techniques.
Loom Knitting Techniques
The Fisherman Seed Rib Insulator is constructed using a small 3/8" gauge loom or a 60-peg round loom in 3/8" gauge. The pattern employs intermediate-level loom knitting techniques that create texture and structural integrity. Key techniques include:
- Wedge Decreases (WD): A shaping technique that involves moving the wedge down one notch to the next set of pegs, transferring the last set of stitches to the wedge pegs on each side, and knitting the two stitches together on the wedge pegs to reduce stitch count.
- Wedge Increases (WI): A more complex shaping method requiring multiple steps, including twin knitting the first wedge peg, moving created stitches to previous pegs, knitting wedge pegs together, and repositioning the wedge upward to add stitches strategically for proper shaping.
- Twin Knitting: A technique used within the wedge increase process to create additional loops and stitches needed for expanding the fabric.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The pattern features a Fisherman Seed Rib stitch pattern, which creates a textured, dimensional surface. This stitch combination produces a fabric with excellent elasticity and visual interest, making it both decorative and functional for an insulator application. The seed rib texture provides grip and helps the insulator stay in place on the jar.
Materials Required
This intermediate project requires minimal materials:
- Loom: Small 3/8" gauge loom or 60-peg round loom in 3/8" gauge
- Yarn: DK to worsted weight yarn in the amount of 70 to 80 yards, allowing flexibility in color and fiber choice
- Tools: Looming hook for manipulating stitches on the pegs
- Notions: Elastic (required for the round loom version) and 3 or 4 buttons for finishing and functional closure
Pattern Format and Skill Level
This downloadable PDF pattern is designed for intermediate loom knitters who are comfortable with basic loom knitting techniques and ready to tackle shaping methods like wedge increases and decreases. The pattern includes a video tutorial reference to support visual learners, making it accessible for crafters who benefit from seeing techniques demonstrated in motion.
