Product Description

This beanie hat combines warmth with your favourite colour combination. I have used a standard guage aran for the pattern so you are not tied to a particular yarn. My prefered choice is Roosters as I love the colours. The braiding makes it a bit different to other hats. The hat is knitted on two needles but if you prefer it could made made using circular ones.

What Is Being Made

The 3 Tone Beanie is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Monica Russel. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a colorful beanie featuring three distinct yarn colors: Damson, Coral, and Gooseberry. The design combines solid-colored sections with decorative braiding pattern rows, resulting in a visually striking accessory with sophisticated color blocking and textural interest.

Craft and Technique Overview

This project uses the knitting craft and is classified as an intermediate difficulty level, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with color changes and multi-strand techniques. The pattern incorporates both basic stockinette stitch and more advanced braiding pattern rows that require working multiple strands of yarn together in a single row.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (K): The primary stitch forming the fabric base
  • Purl stitch (P): Used as needed within the pattern structure
  • Stocking stitch: The main fabric texture, worked over multiple rows in solid colors
  • Braiding pattern: A decorative technique alternating single knit stitches between two colors (rows 1 and 2), then repeating with different color combinations to create a braided visual effect
  • Multi-strand knitting: Two colored strands are knitted together as one to decrease stitch count and create color transitions

Materials and Tools

The 3 Tone Beanie requires yarn that knits to an aran weight. The pattern calls for alpaca and merino blend yarn (50% merino content), with each 50g ball providing 94 meters (103 yards). The beanie begins with 96 stitches cast on.

Two pairs of needles are required: a pair of 4.5mm needles for the initial cast-on and ribbing, and a pair of 5mm needles for the main body. The 5mm needles are used to achieve the correct tension of 19 stitches by 23 rows measuring 10 x 10 centimeters (4 x 4 inches) in stockinette stitch.

Color Palette

  • Colour A: Damson – A deep purple tone
  • Colour B: Coral – A warm peachy-pink shade
  • Colour C: Gooseberry – A soft green hue

Pattern Structure Highlights

The pattern demonstrates intermediate complexity through its use of multiple color changes and stitch manipulation. Key rows include braiding pattern sections (rows 23–24, 35–36) where alternating single stitches in two different colors create a woven appearance. Stockinette stitch sections provide solid color blocks (rows 25–34 in Colour C, rows 37–42 in Colour A). A notable technique involves knitting two colored stitches together on specific rows to return the stitch count to the original 96 stitches, allowing the designer to manage yarn weight transitions smoothly.

Abbreviations

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations: st(s) for stitch(es), K for knit, P for purl, tog for together, and rep for repeat.
