Product Description
A versatile and well-fitting cardigan is a piece we all need in our wardrobes.
This cardigan features staggered cables on the fronts that will keep your knitting interesting while allowing the natural beauty of your yarn to come through.
It also has minimal seaming, as the body of this cardigan is knit in one piece from the bottom up. At the underarms, the fronts and back are finished separately to the shoulders, with short rows for a beautiful fit. Shoulders are seamed together, then the sleeves are picked up and knit down to the cuffs in rows or rounds (for no sleeve seams) with slight tapering to the cuffs.
The right and left front button bands are then picked up and knit, with a short seam at the back neck. Pockets are knit in, with a little bit of sewing to attach the pocket linings.
Cable pattern is both written out and charted. Only one basic cable twist is used throughout, making this a fairly simple stitch pattern.
Shown in Pembroke Worsted. Substitutes listed.
Amber Cardigan #287 by SweaterBabe.com
What is Being Made
The Amber Cardigan is a versatile, well-fitting knitted cardigan designed as an essential wardrobe piece. Featuring an eye-catching color and lovely cabled texture, this intermediate-level cardigan combines practical construction with visual interest. The design showcases staggered cables on the fronts that add textural appeal while allowing the natural beauty and color variations of your yarn to shine through.
Construction and Techniques
This cardigan employs an efficient one-piece construction method, with the body knit from the bottom up. This approach minimizes seaming and creates a cohesive garment. At the underarms, the fronts and back are finished separately to the shoulders, incorporating short rows to achieve a beautiful, custom fit across the shoulder area. The shoulders are then seamed together to complete the upper body.
The sleeves are picked up from the armholes and knit downward to the cuffs. Knitters have the flexibility to work the sleeves in either rows or rounds, with the round option eliminating sleeve seams entirely for a seamless finish.
Stitches Used
- Cable stitches — featured in staggered patterns on the front panels to create the signature textured design
- Short rows — incorporated at the underarms and shoulders for shaping and improved fit
- Stockinette stitch — likely used for body sections to provide contrast with the cabled fronts
Materials
The Amber Cardigan is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for both the cable work and overall garment structure. Standard knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn are required. The pattern accommodates color-variant yarns particularly well, as the cable stagger design allows the yarn's natural color variations to be showcased throughout the finished cardigan.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle cable work and shaping techniques such as short rows. The staggered cable pattern keeps the knitting engaging without becoming overly complex.
