1:6th Scale Genevra Dress by Frances Powell
What is Being Made
The Genevra Dress is a miniature knitted garment designed to fit 29 cm (11½ inch) tall dolls, including Curvy Barbie. This advanced-level pattern creates a sophisticated two-piece dress featuring a loose-fitting blouson bodice paired with a close-fitting skirt. The design is intended to be worn with a belt to emphasize the blouson silhouette on the bodice. The pattern also includes alternative instructions for creating a skirt-only version without the bodice component, offering versatility for miniature doll wardrobes.
Techniques Used
This pattern requires advanced knitting skills and is explicitly not recommended as a first attempt at miniature knitting, even for experienced knitters. The construction involves working at an extremely fine gauge suitable for 1:6th scale dolls. The dress is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques applied at miniature scale, with pieces that must be precisely shaped and fitted. The pattern utilizes stitch holders or safety pins to manage stitches during construction, indicating a multi-piece assembly approach typical of fitted garment construction.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used throughout the Genevra Dress is stockinette stitch (also called stocking stitch), which creates a smooth, refined fabric surface ideal for a tailored dress. The pattern is worked to a precise gauge of 6 rows and 5 stitches per 1 cm over stockinette stitch, demonstrating the exacting specifications required for miniature garment knitting.
Materials Required
- Needles: One pair of 2.00 mm knitting needles
- Yarn: Approximately 70 metres of No 10 or No 12 crochet cotton in lace or thread weight

The completed dress is scaled precisely for miniature dolls with the following measurements: back neck to hem measures 16 cm (6½ inches); long sleeve seam measures 10 cm (4 inches); short sleeve seam measures 2.5 cm (1 inch); and waist measures 6 cm (2¼ inches). These exacting dimensions require careful attention to gauge and precise stitch counting throughout the knitting process.
