Product Description

Valley Yarns Crape Myrtle is a fantastic summer wardrobe building block piece—it’s wonderful on its own or layered over tees, buttondowns, or dresses. This v-neck tank is knit in the Pima cotton and Merino wool blend Granville, giving it a soft and smooth texture, great stitch definition, and a stay-cool feel. Crape Myrtle is knit in the round from hem to underarms with slipped-stitch columns providing sleek focal points at the sides and center front and back. The front and back are completed separately and joined at the shoulder with a three-needle bind-off. An integrated trim along the neckline is extended to meet at the back and joined with Kitchener stitch before being sewn to the back neck. Choose from a trendy cropped length or swingy A-line tunic length options and the beautiful palette of colours with Valley Yarns Granville to create a go-to summer tank.

1303 Crape Myrtle – Women's Tank Jumper Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman for Valley Yarns Granville

The 1303 Crape Myrtle is a stylish, warm-weather tank jumper designed by Julie Turjoman and published by Valley Yarns. This pattern is knitted in Valley Yarns Granville, a sport-weight yarn with a 90% Pima Cotton / 10% Merino Wool blend that delivers excellent breathability, softness, and drape — qualities that make it especially well-suited to a sleeveless warm-season garment. The Crape Myrtle tank is available in two distinct lengths: a cropped version and a tunic length, giving knitters the flexibility to choose a silhouette that suits their personal style. Both versions can be worn on their own or layered over a tee for a relaxed, casual look.

Sizes and Finished Measurements

The pattern is offered in a wide range of sizes to suit many body types:

  • Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, and 5XL
  • Finished Bust: 32¾ to 64 inches, worn with 2–4 inches of positive ease
  • Finished Hip: 35 to 66¼ inches
  • Cropped Length: 10 to 12 inches depending on size
  • Tunic Length: 17 to 19 inches depending on size

The pattern was photographed in size S in both the cropped and tunic lengths, giving buyers a clear visual reference for how each version drapes and fits on the body.

What Is Being Made

The finished object is a sleeveless tank jumper for women, featuring a V-neckline at the front and carefully integrated edging details throughout. The design is notable for its clean, structured aesthetic: narrow columns of slipped stitches run along the center front, center back, and sides of the body, framed by purl stitches that add visual definition and a polished finish. These slip-stitch columns do more than decorate — they also serve a functional purpose by forming the armhole edgings and the V-neck edging, making the finishing feel seamlessly built into the fabric rather than added as an afterthought.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Crape Myrtle tank uses a bottom-up construction, beginning at the hem and working upward. The lower body is worked in the round on circular needles, which creates a smooth, seamless tube from the hem to the underarm. At the underarm, the work is divided and each side is then worked flat (back and forth in rows) to shape the front and back separately up to the shoulders. This combination of in-the-round and flat knitting is a common and practical approach in garment construction, allowing the ease of circular knitting for the body while enabling precise shaping for the upper sections.

  • Bottom-up construction: The garment begins at the hem and progresses toward the shoulders, a method that allows easy length adjustments before committing to the upper body shaping.
  • Worked in the round: The body from hem to underarm is knitted circularly, eliminating side seams in the lower section and producing a clean, continuous fabric.
  • Worked flat: After dividing at the underarms, the front and back are each knitted back and forth in rows, enabling the V-neck and armhole shaping.
  • Seamed construction: The pattern includes seaming as part of the finishing process, including the joining of the neckband at the center back neck.
  • Slip stitch columns: Columns of slipped stitches, framed by purl stitches, run vertically along the center front, center back, and sides. These create structured, decorative lines and also integrate directly into the armhole and neckline edgings.
  • Short-row shoulder shaping: Short rows are used at the shoulders to create a more contoured, better-fitting finish — a technique that adds a professional, tailored quality to the garment without requiring complex construction.
  • Integrated V-neck edging: The front slip-stitch
