Product Description

Written pattern.

This project is not suitable for a first project in miniature knitting as it is knitted in the round on 4 needles.

Materials required: For Mans sweater: 1 set of 4 double ended size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles, 55 yards/50 metres main colour 1-ply wool, 28 yards/25 metres each of two contrast colours 1-ply wool, stitch holders, 1 pair size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles for sleeves (optional).

Note: If knitted on a set of 4 double ended size 21 (0.80 mm) needles and the same pattern, this sweater will fit a 1:12th scale lady doll. Wool requirements are the same as for the mans sweater.

This sweater is designed to hang looser than a normal sweater, as it would have been knitted with very bulky wool. If a tighter fitting sweater is required use a size smaller needle.

Finished size: approx 2½-inches/6 cm tall by 1¾-inches/4 cm wide for mans sweater

1:12th Scale Yoked Sweater by Frances Powell

What is Being Made

This is a miniature yoked sweater designed for 1:12th scale dolls house dolls, fitting dolls that are 5½ to 6 inches (14-15 cm) tall. The pattern includes instructions for both a man's and a lady's version of the sweater. The design features a distinctive yoke construction with the main body and yoke worked in the round, creating a classic fitted silhouette appropriate for dollhouse-scale garments.

Techniques Used

The sweater is constructed using advanced miniature knitting techniques. The primary method involves working in the round on four double-ended needles, a technique that creates seamless cylindrical fabric ideal for the body and yoke sections. This approach eliminates the need for seaming and allows for precise shaping. The yoke is integrated into the main body construction rather than being added separately, demonstrating sophisticated garment architecture. The pattern notes that experienced knitters should undertake this project, as miniature knitting at this scale requires significant skill and precision.

For the lady's version, the sweater is knitted on smaller needles (size 21/0.80 mm) compared to the man's version (size 19/1.00 mm), allowing the same pattern to be adapted for different doll proportions. The designer notes that the sweater is intentionally designed to hang with a looser fit, mimicking how garments would appear when knitted with very bulky yarn at full scale. Knitters seeking a tighter fit can opt for needles one size smaller than specified.

Stitches Used

While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch names, the construction method indicates the use of fundamental knitting stitches worked in circular rows. The yoke shaping likely incorporates decreases to create the fitted shoulder area, a standard technique in yoked sweater construction. The pattern assumes knitter familiarity with reading miniature-scale instructions and executing stitches at cobweb yarn weight.

Materials

Needles: For the man's sweater, one set of 4 double-ended size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles is required, with an optional pair of size 19 needles for sleeve construction. For the lady's sweater, the same pattern uses size 21 (0.80 mm) double-ended needles.

Yarn: The project uses 1-ply wool in a cobweb weight, which is exceptionally fine and requires considerable skill to work with. For either version, the yarn requirements are 55 yards (50 metres) of main colour wool and 28 yards (25 metres) each of two contrast colour wools, allowing for a multi-coloured design element in the yoke. The cobweb weight combined with the 1.00 mm needle size creates the delicate fabric necessary for 1:12th scale garments.

Notions: Stitch holders are required to hold stitches during construction, a standard accessory for yoked sweater patterns.
