1:12th Scale Waistcoat and Trousers c. 1940s by Frances Powell

Project Overview

This advanced knitting pattern from designer Frances Powell creates a historically-inspired 1940s menswear set scaled for 6-inch (15 cm) dolls house dolls. The collection includes a tailored waistcoat with structured front points and a matching pair of trousers, both featuring authentic period details. This is a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for experienced knitters working at miniature scale.

Waistcoat Details

The waistcoat is a fitted garment with distinctive pointed front panels and four functional pockets, capturing the classic silhouette of 1940s menswear. The finished waistcoat measures 5.5 cm (2¼ inches) from neck to front points, 4 cm (1½ inches) across the chest, and 4.5 cm (1¾ inches) from neck to hem at the back.

  • Fitted construction with shaped front points
  • Four pockets for authentic period detail
  • Three miniature buttons for closure
  • Finished neck-to-point measurement: 5.5 cm/2¼ inches

Trousers Details

The trousers feature front pleats and pockets with finished turnups at the ankles, reflecting authentic 1940s tailoring. The completed trousers measure 10 cm (4 inches) from waist to ankle with a 4 cm (1½ inch) waist circumference.

  • Front pleats for structured silhouette
  • Functional pockets
  • Finished turnups at ankles
  • Waist to ankle length: 10 cm/4 inches
  • Waist circumference: 4 cm/1½ inches

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This advanced-level project employs fundamental knitting techniques adapted for miniature work. The pattern uses stocking stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) as the primary fabric construction method, creating a smooth, refined surface appropriate for tailored garments. Shaping techniques include k2tog (knit two stitches together) and p2tog (purl two stitches together) for decreases, allowing the designer to create the fitted waistcoat silhouette and trouser shaping. The pattern utilizes stitch holders or safety pins to manage active stitches during construction, a technique essential for miniature garment assembly.

Materials and Tools

This pattern requires cobweb weight 1-ply yarn, the finest yarn category suitable for creating properly-scaled miniature garments. The waistcoat requires 25 metres (28 yards) of yarn, while the trousers require 75 metres (81 yards). Both pieces are worked on size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles, the smallest standard needle size, essential for achieving appropriate fabric density and stitch definition at 1:12th scale. Additional materials include 3 miniature buttons for the waistcoat, and 3-4 stitch holders or safety pins for managing stitches throughout construction.

Difficulty Level

Rated as advanced, this pattern is designed for experienced knitters with established skills in miniature knitting. The combination of cobweb-weight yarn, ultra-fine needles, and tailored garment construction with shaping details requires precision, patience, and familiarity with working at extreme scale.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern notes that gauge is not critical, as dolls house dolls vary in size. This flexibility allows knitters to adapt the finished pieces to their specific doll, making the pattern more versatile for different miniature collections.
