1:12th Scale Traditional Fishermans Ganseys Set 2
What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern set by designer Frances Powell creates two distinct miniature traditional fisherman's ganseys (sweaters) scaled for 1:12th dollhouse dolls measuring 5½ to 6 inches (14-15 cm) tall. The set includes patterns for a Lerwick Gansey from the Shetland Isles and a Channel Islands Guernsey, both authentic historical garment styles. The Lerwick Gansey finishes at approximately 2¼ inches (5.5 cm) tall with a 1¾-inch (4.5 cm) chest width, while the Channel Islands Guernsey measures approximately 2½ inches (6 cm) tall with the same 1¾-inch (4.5 cm) chest measurement.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This intermediate-level knitting project employs traditional garment construction techniques appropriate for miniature scale work. The patterns utilize fundamental knitting methods adapted for extremely fine gauge work, making this suitable for experienced knitters willing to work at a challenging scale. Construction involves shaping pieces to fit the proportions of dollhouse dolls, with the designer noting that exact gauge is not critical since individual dolls vary in size, allowing for some flexibility in the finished dimensions.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates essential knitting stitches including:
- Garter stitch (gst) – created by knitting every row, producing a textured, reversible fabric
- Stocking stitch (sst) – alternating knit and purl rows to create the classic smooth knit fabric
- Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental knit loop
- Purl stitch (p) – the reverse of the knit stitch
- Decreases – worked by knitting or purling two stitches together (k2tog, p2tog) to reduce stitch count for shaping
- Increases – created by working twice into a single stitch to add stitches for shaping
Materials Required
Creating either gansey requires minimal materials suited to fine-scale miniature knitting:
- One pair of size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 0/5) knitting needles – extremely fine needles essential for working at 1:12th scale
- 55 yards (50 metres) of 1-ply wool in cobweb weight – the finest yarn category, providing the delicate gauge necessary for dollhouse-sized garments
- Stitch holders or small safety pins for holding stitches during construction
The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document, making it accessible for immediate use by knitters interested in creating authentic miniature versions of these traditional fisherman's sweaters for their dollhouse collections.
