What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a complete three-piece men's sportswear set scaled for 1:12th dollhouse dolls measuring 5½ to 6 inches (14-15 cm) tall. The set comprises three separate garments: bathing trunks, a sports sweater with sleeves, and a sleeveless sports pullover. Each piece authentically represents 1940s men's athletic wear styling in miniature form.
Garment Details
Sports Sweater with Sleeves
The sleeved sports sweater features a fitted silhouette appropriate to 1940s menswear design. The finished garment measures approximately 5 centimeters (2 inches) from neck to hem, with sleeve length of 4 centimeters (1½ inches). Construction requires 50 metres (56 yards) of 1-ply wool and utilizes 2 stitch holders during assembly.
Sleeveless Sports Pullover
The sleeveless pullover version offers an alternative layering piece for the dollhouse wardrobe. This garment also measures approximately 5 centimeters (2 inches) from neck to hem and requires 38 metres (42 yards) of 1-ply wool with 2 stitch holders needed during construction.
Bathing Trunks
The bathing trunks complete the sportswear set with period-appropriate styling. These miniature swim trunks measure 3 centimeters (1¼ inches) at the waist with a side seam length of 2 centimeters (¾ inch). Construction requires 25 metres (28 yards) of 1-ply wool, plus a small buckle or ring and a 10-centimeter (4-inch) length of 2 or 3 millimeter ribbon for finishing details.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced-level pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques scaled to extreme miniature proportions. The primary stitch used throughout the garments is stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which alternates knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side to create the smooth, flat fabric characteristic of classic knitwear.
Key abbreviations used in the pattern include:
- st - stitch, the basic unit of knitted fabric
- sst - stocking stitch, the primary fabric construction method
- k - knit stitch
- p - purl stitch
The pattern incorporates stitch holders to manage active stitches during garment assembly, a standard technique for creating clean seams and professional finishing on miniature knitwear.
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires size 19 (1 mm/US size 00000) knitting needles, among the smallest needles available for knitting. The extreme needle size reflects the cobweb yarn weight specified, which represents the finest yarn category used in knitting. All three garments are worked in 1-ply wool, a single-strand yarn construction that provides the delicate weight necessary for 1:12th scale miniature garments.
Total yarn requirements for the complete three-piece set range from 113 metres (126 yards) of 1-ply wool across all three garments. The bathing trunks additionally require finishing materials: a small buckle or ring for waistband closure and a 10-centimeter length of narrow ribbon (2-3 millimeters wide).
Difficulty Level and Sizing Notes
Designed as an advanced-level pattern (rated FP 8), this project demands considerable skill in managing extremely fine yarn and tiny needles while maintaining consistent tension and stitch definition. The pattern notes that gauge (stitch tension) is not critical for dollhouse dolls, as individual dolls vary in size similarly to humans, allowing crafters some flexibility in final fit.
