What Is Being Made

This is a miniature knitted frock designed by Frances Powell for 1:12th scale dolls house dolls, specifically tailored to fit 5½-inch (14 cm) tall dolls. The garment recreates a classic 1948 ladies' tailored style and includes an optional coordinating belt. The pattern is intended for fuller-figured, more matronly doll proportions and may be worn with or without a lace scarf at the neckline.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental knitting construction techniques adapted for miniature scale work. The pattern uses decreasing stitches to shape the garment and achieve proper fit on the small doll form. Knitters will work with extremely fine gauge materials, requiring precision and attention to detail. The frock is constructed as a fitted piece with shaping at the bust and waist, while the belt is a separate component that can be fastened with a small ring or buckle.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches, along with decreasing techniques for shaping the garment. These fundamental stitches are combined to create the tailored silhouette characteristic of 1948 fashion. The abbreviations used in the pattern include st (stitch), k (knit), p (purl), and dec. (decrease).

Materials Required

This miniature project requires Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 0/5) knitting needles for working with extremely fine yarns. The primary material is 55 to 65 yards (50 to 60 metres) of 1-ply wool in a cobweb or lace weight, which provides the delicate fabric necessary for 1:12th scale work. Additional materials include a small amount of wool for the belt and a small ring or buckle for belt closure.

Finished Dimensions

  • Chest width: 2 inches (5 cm)
  • Waist width: 1 inch (2.5 cm)
  • Sleeve length: 1½ inches (4 cm)
  • Total height: 4 inches (10 cm)

Pattern Notes

The designer notes that gauge is not critical for this project, as dolls house dolls vary greatly in size and proportions, similar to human variation. The bust area may require extra padding on some dolls to achieve the intended fuller-figured silhouette. The frock represents authentic 1948 tailoring adapted to miniature scale and is suitable for intermediate knitters comfortable working with very fine materials and small needles.
